When the SRS team, led by Agent Christoph Brüder, arrives at the Yerebatan Sarayi cistern in Istanbul, their immediate objective is to locate and neutralize the Solublon bag before it dissolves. Brüder, wading into the lagoon, initially believes they have arrived in time, noting the date on Zobrist's submerged plaque is "tomorrow" and thinking, "We have several hours to stop this before tomorrow." The team's strategy involves full isolation and containment protocols, including physical and chemical barriers and vacuum systems, to prevent the pathogen from entering the city's water supply or becoming airborne. Dr. Elizabeth Sinskey, the director of the WHO, initially orders the evacuation of the cistern, but Brüder countermands her, shouting, "Seal the doors! Nobody gets out of here!" He argues that in the face of a possible pandemic, containment is the only viable option, forcing Sinskey to accept the grim calculus of sacrificing the few to save the many.

The Failure of Containment

The containment plan collapses almost instantly. Brüder discovers that the Solublon bag has already dissolved, leaving only a "limp tether" and "a few tatters of Solublon plastic" attached to the clasp. The virus has been released. Sinskey herself must now coordinate emergency meetings in Geneva, bringing together specialists from various agencies to confront a crisis that can no longer be physically sealed off. The concept of containment, which began as a tactical operation to isolate a physical object, transforms into a broader, more abstract challenge: containing the knowledge of the virus, managing public panic, and attempting to understand and potentially counteract a genetic alteration that has already been introduced into the global population. The initial hope of a clean, surgical intervention gives way to the messy, uncertain work of living with a threat that can no longer be contained by any door or barrier.
