He is accustomed to quarterbacking carefully constructed game plans, but the Zobrist scenario has disintegrated into chaos, forcing the provost to take over personally. Knowlton's immediate task is to prepare a red memory stick containing a large video file for upload to key media outlets at a specific time the following morning, a routine assignment that falls within his expertise.

Discovery of the Video

When Knowlton previews the video, he is deeply unsettled. The footage shows an eerie, water-filled cavern bathed in a numinous red light, where a camera plunges beneath the surface to reveal a titanium plaque bolted to the silt-covered floor.
