“Gregor’s choke-chain”
Memory“Gregor’s choke-chain” is Ivan Vorpatril’s mocking name for the gold chain of Imperial Auditor rank worn by Miles Vorkosigan. The phrase compresses the office’s double character: a visible badge of authority bestowed by Gregor, and, in Ivan’s joke, a collar that makes its wearer look subject to someone else’s power.
The Chain as Insignia
When Ivan sees the chain around Miles’s neck, its weight and workmanship make the new appointment tangible. Thick gold links connect large square enamel plaques chased with the Vorbarra arms and logos; an electronic seal hangs from a central clasp engraved with Gregor’s arms. Miles estimates that the chain weighs about a kilo. The conspicuous object is not just decorative: it identifies the rank and office that Miles has been given.
Ivan’s Joke
Ivan reacts first with astonishment, reaching out to tick the chain and asking whether it is real. Miles answers with a dry comparison to foil-wrapped chocolate, treating the grand insignia as if it were merely packaging. Ivan then turns the object into a personal barb: “Well, well, Miles. I must say, it does look right on you. I always thought you needed a choke-chain.” The joke makes the chain’s visual likeness to a restraint carry an edge of familiarity and ridicule; its imperial grandeur does not prevent Ivan from seeing a leash.
Authority and Its Limits
The phrase returns as a shorthand for the practical benefit of Miles’s acting office. At the Imperial Service hospital complex, staff initially leave him waiting in the corridors like any other veteran seeking treatment. Once he casually mentions that he is an acting Imperial Auditor, the delay does not recur. The narration remarks that Gregor’s choke-chain has proved useful: the title and its insignia can change how institutions respond to Miles.
That leverage is temporary, however. Miles explains that he is only an acting Auditor and that his tenure ends when his case is closed. Asked why an Auditor would want reinstatement in the Service as an ImpSec captain, he gives that distinction as the answer to the apparent mismatch. The chain thus signifies real authority without making Miles’s position permanent: it opens doors during the investigation, but does not settle what comes after it.
