The night before the broadcast, she and Julián had a casual dinner and walked through El Parque del Retiro, where Julián asked whether she liked children. Ambra, feeling a surge of fear, tried to tell him about her infertility but could not bring herself to speak. The next morning, on the Telediario soundstage, Ambra engaged in a comfortable on-air chat with the three hosts, unaware that Julián had arranged a surprise. As the segment concluded, the female host announced that a special guest had made a surprise visit to the studio, and Prince Julián strode onto the set to wild applause.
The Public Proposal and Its Consequences
Julián, speaking directly to the camera, declared that his father had always been a romantic and that he had inherited that romanticism, believing that when a man finds love, he knows in an instant. He then knelt before Ambra and asked her to marry him, putting her in an impossible position before millions of viewers. Ambra stood in silent panic, a thousand thoughts racing through her head, knowing that she could not risk shaming the future king of Spain on national television. Trapped, she accepted, saying she was hesitating because she could not believe this fairy tale had a happy ending. The studio erupted in wild applause. Ten minutes later, in the back of his limousine, Ambra told Julián the truth about her infertility, and he shifted away from her ever so slightly, confirming that the engagement was built on a foundation of withheld information and public pressure rather than genuine mutual understanding.
Narrative Significance
RTVE's Telediario functions as the mechanism that transforms a private relationship into a public contract, stripping Ambra of any choice and binding her to a man she barely knows. The broadcast is the first of several media events in the novel that manipulate public perception and trap characters in roles they did not freely choose.
