Knapsack

Grenouille's knapsack is a coarse linen bag, the kind carried by itinerant journeymen, that becomes an essential tool in his systematic campaign to harvest the scents of young women. It first appears when he packs it for the pursuit of Laure Richis, containing the implements of his craft: a linen cloth, a pot of pomade, a spatula, scissors, and a small, smooth club of olive wood. The knapsack is not merely a piece of luggage but a mobile laboratory and arsenal, enabling him to perform the cold enfleurage technique he has perfected in Grasse. After the murder of Laure Richis in La Napoule, he carries the scent-impregnated cloth, her hair, and her nightgown away in the knapsack, transforming it into a reliquary of stolen essence. When the authorities search his cabin in the olive grove behind the Franciscan cloister, they find the knapsack, along with the wooden club and the clothes and hair of all twenty-four previous victims, making it a key piece of physical evidence that, together with his confession, leads to his conviction and sentence of death by breaking on the wheel. The knapsack thus functions as a silent accomplice, a container for both the means and the spoils of his olfactory conquests, and finally as the object that helps bring his crimes to light.
