University of Perugia

Piranesi

The University of Perugia is the university where Maurizio Giussani studied philosophy, linking the institution to the young student whose disappearance followed a dinner hosted by Laurence Arne-Sayles. It also places the events at Casale del Pino within a broader academic milieu: Arne-Sayles’s circle drew on claims about ancient knowledge and ritual, while students and researchers around him became participants in his experiments and disputes.

Academic Setting

Giussani was a philosophy student at the University of Perugia. He became friendly with Stanley Ovenden and Tali Hughes, members of Arne-Sayles’s group who had increasingly withdrawn from the tense atmosphere at Casale del Pino. Their new friendship alarmed Arne-Sayles, making Giussani’s connection to the university part of the chain of circumstances that brought him into the group’s orbit.

The Dinner and Giussani’s Disappearance

On 26 July, Arne-Sayles invited Giussani and his fiancée, Elena Marietti, to dinner at Casale del Pino. During the meal he spoke about the Other World, where architecture and oceans were confused together, and about the possibility of reaching it. Marietti understood this as metaphor or perhaps as a description of a drug-induced experience; the account establishes the contrast between Arne-Sayles’s extraordinary claims and the more ordinary interpretation available to his guests.

Marietti left at about eleven to work the following day. The English members of the party had promised to drive Giussani home, but the group later said he declined the offer and began walking shortly after midnight. He lived about three kilometres away, and the night was warm and moonlit. Arne-Sayles claimed to have gone to bed soon after Marietti departed and said he knew nothing of what followed. Giussani was never seen again.

Place in the Story

The University of Perugia is not depicted as an active participant in the events; its importance is contextual. It identifies Giussani as a student whose ordinary academic life intersected with the increasingly secretive and volatile circle around Arne-Sayles. That connection sharpens the unresolved disappearance: a young man from the university entered a gathering where theories of access to another world were discussed, then vanished under circumstances for which the surviving accounts differ.
