Nicoya poisons and abducts Sagan

Pleasure

Nicoya poisons and abducts Sagan, turning a brief wound into a near-fatal ordeal that leaves him in Acadian’s power and later erases his memory of the attack. The episode reverses the confidence of a priest accustomed to pursuing others: poisoned and captured, he faces death with faith, then returns alive without knowing how he survived.

Causes and Capture

Sagan is a penance priest, one of five elite chosen by the gods, who hunts those who Sin and forces them to repent. As a Shadowdweller and Nightwalker, he belongs to a world defined by nighttime and blessed blackness. In the conflict against enemies of Sanctuary and the royal house of the Chancellery, Nicoya strikes him with a weapon dipped in poison. A single small scratch is enough to defeat him.

As the poison burns through him, Sagan understands that he has lost a crucial battle. Nicoya can leave unchallenged to continue her violence, while Acadian’s lackeys drag him away to become Acadian’s newest plaything. Sagan does not know whether he will survive long enough to face that captivity. Having seen Acadian’s handiwork on a friend’s scarred, tortured body, he can imagine what may await him; his faith also lets him take comfort in the possibility that Drenna will welcome him into the Beyond if he dies.

Poison and Collapse

The poison first makes pain feel bracing and clarifying, then turns Sagan’s mind into a rush of visions. In Shadowscape, he runs through the lightless dimension from a predator; in Dreamscape, the roles reverse and he becomes the hunter, pursuing Sinner prey. The two scenes blur together as thought and sensation surge beyond his capacity to manage them.

The overload shuts down both body and mind, compared to the failure of an entire electrical grid. The poison’s effect is therefore more than physical agony: it disorients Sagan across the distinct worlds he inhabits and leaves him unable to retain what happened. His later return establishes that the collapse did not kill him, but the account does not explain precisely how he escaped Acadian or made his way back.

Return and Aftermath

Sagan reappears at Sanctuary alive, supported by Magnus and Daenaira. Daenaira’s relief breaks through her usual defenses: she throws her arms around him so forcefully that Magnus has to intervene and remind her to let him breathe. She tells Sagan that Nicoya is dead, that Nicoya had claimed to have killed him, and that Henry is well but has been deeply worried. She and Magnus had feared Acadian had taken Sagan for her own amusement, particularly after learning that Nicoya was Acadian’s daughter.

Sagan cannot follow the explanation. He asks what Acadian has to do with what happened, why he would fight Nicoya, and what became of Henry; Magnus and Daenaira guide him into Sanctuary while he remains confused. A day later, he sits in the healers’ clinic unusually quiet and withdrawn. Magnus reports that the healers believe the trauma of the poison erased his memory: Sagan recalls neither fighting Nicoya nor her insurrection, and cannot say how he was poisoned or escaped. Daenaira identifies Nicoya’s toxic weapon as the cause and, furious, says she wishes she could kill Nicoya again. Even after the immediate danger has passed, Daenaira senses that something is wrong beyond the severe physical strain Sagan endured.
