Valera and Sagan’s romantic relationship

Pleasure

Valera and Sagan’s romantic relationship joins intimate care to a shared effort to change how Nightwalkers understand magic. In a moment when Valera’s healing magic is urgently needed, Sagan supports her without taking over her work; afterward, their tenderness turns toward the future they have chosen together, including the life—and cats—they will share.

Care Under Pressure

As Valera works to heal Guin, she trembles with effort and fear. Sagan understands both through his telepathy: she wants to make amends for the harm necromancers have caused other Nightwalkers, but is afraid she will fail, including in his eyes. He kneels behind her and caresses her back. The touch appears to strengthen her; her posture firms and her voice grows more assured as she insists that her magic do good work. His support is intimate, but it also leaves the decisive act to Valera.

When the healing succeeds, Valera draws back into Sagan’s arms, and he holds her tightly. The scene makes their attachment visible through small physical actions: his steadying touch during her fear, then his embrace once the strain has passed. Her thoughts turn to how extraordinary it still feels that he belongs to her, and to the responsibility she feels for their shared future.

A Shared Purpose

Their relationship extends beyond private devotion. Their immediate plan is to visit the Nightwalker courts so Valera can demonstrate what she is and show that good witches exist. They also hope to teach Nightwalkers how to save people who have used magic wrongly and become caught up in necromancy, as Valera once did. Her experience gives this work personal weight; Sagan’s presence beside her makes it a shared undertaking.

Choosing a New Life

Sagan has given up the priestly status he held for more than two centuries so that he can love Valera freely. She worries that he may miss the role or find himself unhappy without it, and resolves to do what she can to help him find contentment in their life together. His reassurance frames the change not as an ending but as a beginning with her. Valera adds the cats to that imagined future, and Sagan warmly agrees. Their exchange brings the scale of his renunciation down to the ordinary particulars of companionship: not only a life remade, but a home shared with her and the cats.
