Five Daily Duties of Brahmins

Ramayana

The Five Daily Duties of Brahmins form a daily program of learning, ritual observance, hospitality, and food-giving. The account names each obligation and gives a concrete form for the offering to all creatures: rice or other grain set outside the house in the open air.

The Five Obligations

The first duty is to study the Veda, paired with teaching it. Learning and instruction are presented together, making the transmission of sacred knowledge part of the daily routine rather than a private pursuit alone.

The second duty is to make oblations to the manes, or spirits of the departed. The daily schedule thus includes offerings directed toward the dead alongside those made to divine recipients.

The third duty is sacrifice to the gods. It places worship within the same recurring set of obligations as study, instruction, ancestral offerings, hospitality, and giving to living beings.

The fourth duty is to make hospitable offerings to men. Human guests and visitors are included among those to whom a householder owes a daily offering, giving hospitality a defined place within religious observance.

The fifth duty is to give food to all creatures. Its stated form is especially specific: rice or other grain is offered every day outside the house, in the open air. The practice extends daily giving beyond human guests to creatures more broadly.

Scope and Significance

Taken together, the five duties connect distinct recipients and practices within one recurring pattern: sacred learning is studied and taught; offerings are made to ancestors and gods; hospitality is extended to people; and food is set out for all creatures. The list therefore defines daily religious conduct not only through sacrifice, but also through instruction and acts of giving.

The accompanying note attributes the formulation to Manu, Book III, verse 70, and identifies Gorresio as its source. It presents the five duties as a concise account of Brahmin obligations, with the outdoor grain offering supplying a tangible detail for the otherwise broad requirement to feed all creatures.
