Indrajit's magical Sita illusion
RamayanaIndrajít’s magical Sítá illusion is a staged act of battlefield deception in the war for Lanka: after killing countless Vánars with invisible arrows, he returns in a chariot carrying a magical effigy of Sítá and cuts it down in front of Hanúmán and the Vánar host. The episode turns Sítá’s captivity into a weapon of spectacle, then leads into the fighting that ends with Indrajít’s death at Lakshmaṇ’s hand.
The Attack and the Effigy
Indrajít first uses his magical art to become invisible, striking the Vánars with arrows and killing countless warriors. He then withdraws to the city. His return changes the form of the attack: he comes in his chariot with an effigy of Sítá, fashioned by magic and presented as weeping and wailing.
The effigy makes the assault personal as well as military. Indrajít grasps the image by the hair and cuts it down with his scimitar, exposing the assembled Hanúmán and Vánar host to an apparent killing of the woman they seek to rescue. The account identifies the figure as a magical image, not Sítá herself; the violence is directed at a representation staged before witnesses.
Witnesses and Immediate Effect
Hanúmán and the Vánar host see Indrajít destroy the image, and the narration describes them as enraged. The scene’s force lies in this public display: after an unseen attack that has already killed many, Indrajít makes the apparent fate of Sítá visible to the rescuing army. The passage establishes their anger, but does not specify what they believe about the image or how long any mistaken belief lasts.
Place in the Battle
The illusion occurs within a continuing sequence of combat, not as an isolated deception. After the staged killing, fighting continues; Indrajít’s chariot is eventually broken and his charioteer killed. Indrajít then falls by Lakshmaṇ’s hand, a reversal that gives the episode its place in the larger battle: the warrior who first attacks from invisibility and then uses a counterfeit Sítá to provoke the enemy is ultimately defeated in combat.
