Sītā is discovered while Janaka plows the earth

Ramayana

Sítā is discovered while Janak plows the earth, an episode that gives her an extraordinary origin and shapes her future. Janak finds her as an infant beneath his plough, raises her as his cherished daughter, and vows her as a prize worthy of the noblest hero.

The Discovery

Janak recounts that he was plowing when an infant appeared from beneath the share. The discovery is sudden and rooted in the earth itself: Sítā enters his life not through an ordinary birth but as a child found in the furrow. Janak names her Sítā in connection with this mysterious arrival.

Janak’s Daughter

The account moves from discovery to kinship. Sítā grows in strength and grace, and Janak describes her as his cherished daughter. Her remarkable origin does not leave her outside the family: Janak makes her his own and places her within his household and dynastic life.

The Vow and Its Consequence

Janak declares that Sítā, whose birth he says was no mortal one, will be the prize for a hero of exceptional worth. The discovery thus leads directly to a condition for her marriage: her unknown origin and admired qualities become part of the standard by which a suitor must prove himself. The episode joins a private act of finding and raising a child to the public challenge through which Janak will seek a worthy husband for her.
