The Honey Feast at Madhuvana
RamayanaThe Honey Feast at Madhuvana turns the returning Vánars’ relief into a public, unruly celebration. Their assault on the honeyed stores and the keeper’s resistance make the feast a comic interruption of the search mission; Sugríva reads their very excess as evidence that the mission has succeeded and orders them onward without delay.
Background and Return
The feast follows the southern search for Sítá. As the Vánars return, their flight darkens the region with their shadows. At Madhuvana, they gather around Angad and ask their leader for permission to eat the honeyed stores. The request places the celebration within the party’s return journey, rather than presenting it as an unrelated indulgence.
Feast and Confrontation
The Vánars’ pleasure becomes a raid on the stores. Dadhimukh, the keeper, sees the intoxicated multitude and reacts furiously. The monkeys use claws, teeth, and hands against him, beating him beneath their trampling feet. The episode sets the keeper’s attempt to defend the grove against a crowd whose behavior has escaped ordinary restraint; the feast is both a release of pent-up excitement and a breach of the place’s order.
Sugríva’s Interpretation and Aftermath
Dadhimukh escapes and hurries to Sugríva to report the misconduct. Sugríva does not treat the report simply as grounds for punishment. He infers from the party’s exuberance and mischief that Hanumán and his band have been successful in their search, and understands their conduct as the natural expression of joy. He gives Dadhimukh little sympathy and tells him to return and send the Vánars onward as quickly as possible.
Narrative Significance
The feast makes success legible before the search party delivers its news: the Vánars’ behavior itself becomes a sign that the mission has reached a favorable outcome. The keeper’s complaint, which might ordinarily invite discipline, instead confirms Sugríva’s hopeful reading. Celebration briefly disrupts the search party’s purpose, but Sugríva converts that disorder into a prompt to resume the journey and bring the news forward.
