Kauśalyá–Ráma relationship
RamayanaThe Kauśalyá–Ráma relationship is rendered through a reunion shaped by separation, mourning, and filial respect. During Ráma’s forest exile, Kauśalyá encounters the traces of his devotion in a funeral offering and then sees him at his hermitage, where his formal reverence gives their reunion its defining gesture.
Grief and Recognition
Kauśalyá appears with a faded cheek and weeping eyes, her grief made visible before she speaks. At the riverbank, she notices the funeral offering directed toward the southern sky and recognizes it as a humble gift made by Ráma. The offering connects the absent son to his family through an act of remembrance: even in exile, he has not forgotten the dead or the rites owed to them.
The Offering and Filial Duty
Kauśalyá interprets Ráma’s offering as meaningful beyond its material form. She reflects that the gods do not refuse the food their children use, treating the modest rite as a bond between the living and the departed. Her response gives the scene a domestic as well as ritual dimension: Ráma’s conduct reaches his mother as evidence of continuing care, although he is far from the royal household.
Reunion at the Hermitage
The women are comforted and make their way to Ráma’s hermitage. They see him joyless and stripped of former comforts; he rises from his seat and clasps the ladies’ feet. The scene places Ráma’s personal loss alongside the sorrow of his family, while his gesture expresses respect rather than distance. Kauśalyá’s reunion with him is therefore conveyed not through a private exchange alone, but within a meeting of the grieving royal women and the exiled son.
The Relationship in Exile
The episode joins two forms of filial connection: Ráma’s observance of funeral duty and his deference to the women when they arrive. Kauśalyá, in turn, recognizes his offering and receives it as a sign that family obligation persists across separation. Their relationship is defined here by mourning and reverence, with the funeral gift serving as the concrete link between a son living in the forest and the mother who comes to find him.
