Rāma and Sītā’s separation and his quest to rescue her
RamayanaRāma and Sītā’s separation and his quest to rescue her are presented as a rupture in a devoted marriage: Sītā had clung steadfastly to her husband, and her abduction leaves Rāma overwhelmed by grief and intent on finding her. The surviving scenes emphasize both the intimacy that makes the separation painful and the resolve it awakens in him.
Attachment Before the Separation
The relationship is characterized through Sītā’s fidelity. Recalling her absence, Rāma describes her as gentle and young, yet steadfastly attached to her husband. This detail gives the separation its emotional measure: the loss is not merely of a companion, but of someone whose devotion had bound her life to his.
The Abduction and Rāma’s Grief
When Rāma returns to their leafy dwelling and finds Sītā gone, the discovery breaks his composure. The poem says that his senses fail and that he weeps and wails in despair. The suddenness of this scene makes absence itself the immediate force acting on him: the home he enters is familiar, but the person he seeks is missing.
Rāma identifies the event as the abduction of his captured wife. He asks where the fiend carried her and describes Sītā as dearer to him than life. His grief also becomes anger directed at the abductor, whom he holds responsible for bringing destruction upon the giants. Love and vengeance thus emerge together from the same violation.
Separation as Quest
The search does not relieve Rāma’s distress at once. Even on a mountain whose setting supplies his needs, his troubled mind finds no comfort while he mourns his stolen wife. He measures the time apart not as an ordinary interval but as an ordeal: the separation seems to him to last a hundred years. The relationship’s narrative force lies in this contrast between Sītā’s remembered constancy and Rāma’s continuing grief, which turns the search for her into the central expression of his attachment. These passages establish the quest and its emotional stakes, but do not settle the couple’s eventual reunion or fate.
