Cobras

Shantaram

Cobras appear in the Cuffe Parade slum as both captive animals and a real danger to its residents. When a monkey opens their basket at night, the threat turns a crowded refuge into a scene of confusion, and the residents must organize to find the snakes and return them safely.

Shelter in the Slum

As the monsoon approaches, itinerant performers and animal handlers bring their animals to the slum for shelter from the coming floods. The settlement becomes a sprawling ark, accommodating, among others, snake charmers who keep cobras in covered wicker baskets. The animals are welcomed along with their handlers, though their presence creates new practical hazards in a densely inhabited place.

The Open Basket

On the first night of the animal groups’ stay, a monkey escapes while its handlers are asleep. It crosses several hut roofs, enters the hut used by a group of snake charmers, removes the stone securing one wicker basket, and opens it. Three cobras are loose. From a safe position atop the hut, the monkey shrieks and wakes the snake charmers, whose alarm spreads through the settlement.

Panic and Recovery

Residents rush through the dark with kerosene lanterns and flaming torches, striking at shadows and accidentally beating one another’s feet and shins with sticks and poles. In the stampede, several flimsy huts are knocked over. Qasim Ali restores order and organizes the snake charmers into two search parties. The groups search the slum systematically, find the cobras, and return them to their basket.

The episode makes the cobras’ danger concrete without describing them as attacking anyone: the immediate injuries and damage arise from the frightened crowd’s response. Their escape exposes the risks of keeping venomous animals among fragile huts, while the organized search shows how the residents’ collective action can contain a crisis within a place that also serves as a refuge for people and animals.
