Wild dogs
ShantaramThe Wild dogs are a vicious pack remembered through their fight with Lin and Tariq during the Night of the Wild Dogs. The surviving account emphasizes the encounter’s human aftermath rather than describing the animals individually: the dogs mark a dangerous confrontation and, in Lin’s memory, a moment of courage from the young Tariq.
The Pack and the Encounter
The pack is identified only as vicious; no individual dog, physical description, or further behavior is specified in the account. Lin and Tariq fought them in the Cuffe Parade Slum, at a place later recognizable by a small pile of scrap timber and stones. The encounter is named the Night of the Wild Dogs, giving the animal threat a lasting place in the story’s recollection without supplying a detailed account of how the fight unfolded.
The Encounter’s Afterlife
Much later, Lin returns to the spot while walking through the slum at night. The timber and stones remain, making the location a concrete trace of the earlier struggle. As he sits there, he thinks of the dogs, the fight, and especially Tariq’s bravery. The pack therefore remains significant not through further appearances, but as part of the memory through which Lin recalls the danger they faced together and the courage of a child.
