2324
Strike2324 is the novel’s future setting and the year in which the struggle over the Bridge becomes an open battle over the dome. The city’s streets carry two realities at once: a public convinced that invasion and colonization are beginning, and a covert Sounder operation whose purpose is to end the Bridge. The contrast sharpens as a procession that looks like a victory parade leads toward a threshold that must remain closed, while the people defending it face an assault on their own base.
Bridge City and the operation
The future scenes place the action in Bridge City, three hundred years beyond the earlier events and five kilometers ahead of the group’s position in the past. A small party of Air Force personnel makes its way along a broad street toward the dome. Colonel Pike leads it; with her are the intense young Airman Eric Lewis, Airman First Class Olivia Kinsey, and Liger, a forty-year-old civilian nuclear engineer. Liger’s plain gray fatigues set him apart from the camouflage worn by the others. Their measured, purposeful walk gives nothing away to people around them, even as the line of giant black planes waiting to travel into the past makes the stakes of their mission visible. The party does not outwardly react to the aircraft, but their presence heightens both anxiety and resolve.
The setting is not simply a futuristic backdrop. The planes queued along the street connect the ordinary movement of people through the city to the military project of carrying the conflict into the past. The party’s outwardly unremarkable passage through that landscape makes concealment part of the operation: it must cross a public space filled with signs of war without drawing attention to its purpose.
A procession misread
As the party comes within two hundred yards of the dome, the hovering device being moved along the street draws the attention of the crowd. Many people recognize what it is and watch in wonder; some applaud. They believe its arrival at the Bridge means that the next phase of invasion and colonization is underway. The plans have been heard throughout the city, and the device seems to offer visible confirmation that those plans are becoming reality. The crowd’s response turns the transfer into a public celebration, a send-off for a supposed hero of the war.
That interpretation is the scene’s sharpest reversal. The crowd reads the device as proof of the future they have been promised, but the Sounder team keeps its heads down and moves quickly. Public confidence and covert resistance occupy the same street, yet the people watching cannot see the operation’s actual purpose. The apparent pageantry therefore provides cover for a mission whose outcome is not triumph in the invasion, but an attempt to close the route that makes invasion possible.
The departure and the battle
The team eventually steps through the glowing frame and disappears. The last sounds its members hear from 2324 are the first sounds of a new battle. The transition links the operation’s departure directly to the fighting left behind: outside the dome, more soldiers arrive and advance toward its massive doors. The Sounders have prepared a formidable defense, firing Pulsers from behind armored vehicles and forcing the attackers back. The attacking soldiers have not trained to assault their own base and lack the personnel and firepower needed to break through the defense. Colonel Pike has counted on that disadvantage.
The defense nevertheless remains precarious. The Retro force becomes fully manned as guards join the fighting after rounding up prisoners. Its commanders drive the soldiers forward despite heavy losses, hoping enough will survive to recapture the dome. A few reach the door, but are cut down before they can enter. The Sounder line holds for the moment, while the uncertainty of how long it can hold gives the battle its immediate pressure. The dome is both a physical strongpoint and the barrier between the combatants and the Bridge inside.
The sealed door and Olivia Kinsey
The crisis in 2324 is condensed in Olivia Kinsey’s position before the dome’s immense closed door. If the bomb is to destroy the Bridge, the door must stay shut. This requirement makes holding the entrance more than a defensive objective: the success of the larger plan depends on keeping the dome sealed while the fighting outside threatens to break through.
The same condition traps Olivia Kinsey. Her only way out is through the Bridge into the past, but the door she needs for escape must remain closed for the bomb to do its work. She runs to Colonel Pike and drops beside her, hoping that Pike is still alive. Pike’s eyes are glazed and unfocused; she is breathing, but barely. The scene brings the future’s military conflict down to a single human crisis beside the door: the mission demands that the barrier remain shut, while an injured leader and an isolated team member face the consequences of that necessity.
Taken together, these episodes define 2324 as more than a distant date. It is the setting of a society mobilized for an invasion, a city whose people mistake a covert operation for the fulfillment of official plans, and a battlefield where the fate of the Bridge rests on a closed door. The procession’s cheering and the battle’s gunfire mark opposite readings of the same future: one imagines conquest beginning, while the Sounders fight to end the route that would sustain it.
