Irons and Works

Irons and Works is a Fairfield workplace connected to the community around Colton and Marcel. It matters not only as a place of employment: its workers help create a support network that can offer practical backing when personal conflicts threaten to become dangerous.

Work and Connections

Sam works full time at Irons and Works while also discussing a possible joint teaching practice with Marcel. Marcel enjoys teaching yoga and considers building a new way to do it, but Sam is unwilling to commit to such a venture full time. Their conversation makes the workplace a concrete limit on Marcel’s plans: the idea of working together exists, but Sam’s established job prevents it from becoming a shared full-time commitment.

Employees and Conflict

The workplace is also part of Colton’s circle of chosen family. When Brad confronts Marcel and Jason helps him, Colton thinks of Will and the people around him as family, while dismissing Jason as no one to him. Later, Jason admits that he damaged the car and helped stage a fake accident, explaining that he thought it was merely retaliation against Marcel for leaving Brad. He had not known what Brad intended. The confession links workplace conflict to a wider scheme, while showing that the employees’ understanding of events had been incomplete.

Protection and Aftermath

After the incident, the men of Irons and Works dog Brad’s every step, and Brad does not remain in Fairfield long. Their presence gives the workplace a collective role in the aftermath: its men help constrain Brad’s movements as Marcel turns toward a future with Colton. The novel presents that support as part of the couple’s surrounding community, rather than as an isolated act of individual rescue.

Narrative Significance

Irons and Works connects livelihood, companionship, and protection. Sam’s full-time work shapes what he can offer Marcel professionally, while the workplace’s social ties become consequential when Brad’s conflict with Marcel escalates. The same community that limits one possible collaboration also helps make Fairfield a place where Marcel and Colton can move forward with support around them.
