Aunt Wendy

Aunt Wendy is the Aunt responsible for the Ardua Hall print shop, where the Pearl Girls' brochures are designed and printed. She is described by Aunt Lydia as having "the brain of a guppy" and being "incapable of devising such a scheme" as the microdot communication system that Mayday had been using. When Commander Judd orders a raid on the print shop as part of his investigation into the leak of information from within Gilead, Aunt Wendy is arrested. Aunt Lydia reports that the Eyes and Angels "confiscated all our Pearl Girls brochures" and that "Aunt Wendy protested, and I am sorry to say she was arrested. They actually laid hands on her!" Judd later confirms that Aunt Wendy was taken for questioning, but that she was quickly deemed not to be the traitor. He tells Aunt Lydia, "We raided the Ardua Hall print shop, and retained Aunt Wendy for questioning. It seemed the most direct path to the truth." Aunt Lydia responds, "I cannot believe Aunt Wendy is implicated. That woman is incapable of devising such a scheme. She has the brain of a guppy. I suggest you release her immediately." Judd agrees, saying, "So we have concluded. She will recover from the shock in the Calm and Balm Clinic." Aunt Wendy's arrest and release serve as a minor plot point, demonstrating the reach of Commander Judd's investigation and the vulnerability of even the Aunts to the regime's security apparatus. Her character is defined by her limited role and her lack of involvement in the larger conspiracy, making her a useful but expendable figure in the power struggles of Ardua Hall.
