Elijah

Elijah is a key Mayday operative in Canada who acts as a strategist, courier coordinator, and revealer of hidden truths. First encountered at the SanctuCare refugee organization and later at the Carpitz safe house, he is the one who, together with Ada, delivers the shattering revelation that Daisy is Baby Nicole, the infant smuggled out of Gilead whose image has been used as a propaganda icon by both sides. He is a man of few words but decisive action, with a scarred face and a missing molar that give him an illegal appearance, and he wears a T-shirt reading "TWO WORDS, ONE FINGER" and a Blue Jays baseball cap. His role is that of a mentor and planner, not a field agent: he stays behind the scenes while others execute the dangerous missions.

Role in the Mayday Network

Elijah is deeply embedded in the Mayday resistance network. He is present at the Meeting House (Quakers) where Ada first brings Daisy after the car bomb that kills Neil and Melanie, and he later appears at the Carpitz safe house, a wholesale carpet outlet that serves as a Mayday operations center. He is the one who explains the microdot courier system to Daisy: Neil and Melanie used a miniature camera to photograph documents, reducing them to microscopic dots that were then glued onto the Pearl Girls brochures that Melanie accepted at The Clothes Hound. The Pearl Girls, unwittingly, carried these dots back into Gilead. Elijah describes this system as "foolproof for a time" and notes that the source inside Gilead used the same method to send information out. He also reveals that the source had a fallback plan: a young woman claiming to have been converted by the Pearl Girls could enter Gilead, and the only acceptable courier for the document cache would be Baby Nicole herself.

Revelation of Daisy's True Identity

Elijah is the one who, with Ada present, tells Daisy that her birthday is not real and that Neil and Melanie were not her parents. He speaks bluntly, saying "I know this is distressing for you, but it's important, so I'll say it again. Neil and Melanie were not your parents. Sorry to be so blunt, but we don't have much time." When Daisy asks who her real parents are, Elijah tells her they are still alive, and then reveals that she was born in Gilead and smuggled out by her mother and Mayday. He then delivers the final blow: "You are Baby Nicole." This revelation shatters Daisy's understanding of her own identity and sets her on the path to becoming the courier for the document cache that will help bring down Gilead.

Planning the Infiltration

Elijah is central to the planning of Nicole's infiltration of Gilead. He explains that the source inside Gilead has made it clear: no Baby Nicole, no document cache. He tells Nicole that she is the best chance because if she gets caught, Gilead will not dare kill her, having made her too much of an icon. He outlines the training she will undergo: "We'll train you. Praying and self-defence." He also warns her that once she is in Gilead, she will have to wear what they tell her to wear, watch what she says, and be alert to their customs. He acknowledges the risk, calling it "a gamble," but insists that the source's information has always been accurate. When Nicole expresses fear that the source might be a decoy or a trap, Elijah admits, "We've considered the possibility. It's a gamble." He is the one who, after Nicole agrees to go, tells her that the source has demanded a specific tattoo on her left forearm, which will serve as a signal to the Pearl Girls.

Relationship with Other Characters

Elijah works closely with Ada, who is more of a field operative and driver, while he handles the strategic and informational side of the operation. He is also in contact with Garth, who trains Nicole in self-defense and later poses as her boyfriend on the street. Elijah's relationship with Nicole is that of a mentor who must deliver hard truths and then trust her to carry out a dangerous mission. He shows a kind of weary kindness, telling her "I'm sorry to be the messenger" when he reveals her true parentage, and later, when she is overwhelmed, he says "None of us likes it. We would all like reality to be otherwise." He is the one who, after the mission is underway, reports to Nicole in the hospital that the document cache has been released and is "explosive," and that "pretty soon heads will roll." He also notes that Gilead News is calling it all fake, but that it is "the beginning" of the end for the regime.
