“The light must rise in the mountains of the west”

Tide

“The light must rise in the mountains of the west” is a cryptic message associated with Nieryn An Fhoinse. Its importance lies not in an explained meaning, but in the chain of transmission around it: an elf gives the prince words for the king, and Galahad Stormcrane recognizes the name behind the account while the prince stops short of confirming what happened.

The Message

Prince James recounts that the elf told him to pass a message to the king: “The light must rise in the mountains of the west.” The wording offers a direction and an imperative, but the exchange supplies no explanation of what the light is or which mountains are meant. Its force in the scene comes from being carried between people rather than interpreted outright.

The prince connects the message with a change he noticed afterward. When he later came to the woods, he no longer heard any laughing. The account places that silence after the encounter with the elf, but does not establish that the message caused it or explain what the laughter had signified.

Identification and Uncertainty

Galahad responds by naming Nieryn An Fhoinse, suggesting that he recognizes the elf in the prince’s story. The prince smiles quietly and answers only that this is perhaps what he likes to think. His reply preserves a distinction between Galahad’s identification and what the prince can claim to know: Nieryn’s presence remains a plausible reading, not a confirmed fact.

That uncertainty gives the expression its narrative character. It links an enigmatic instruction to an encounter remembered through what vanished afterward—the laughter in the woods—without resolving either the message’s meaning or the cause of the silence. The scene lets recognition emerge, then leaves its interpretation open.
