Meira Receives the Enchanted Blade to Kill the New Queen
TideMyrkur’s revelation that Meira has received an enchanted blade turns a gift into the focus of a threatened assassination and a struggle over the Mhuirlan Seal. The blade offers Meira a way back to mermaid form, but its stated purpose is to kill the new queen, Beatrix, making the promised restoration inseparable from a grave act of violence.
The Gift on the Balcony
Myrkur tells Galahad Stormcrane that she sought out Meira’s sisters and that they brought the blade to Meira that day while she stood on the lower balcony of Perlkastel. The sisters act as intermediaries: the weapon is Myrkur’s gift, delivered through Meira’s family. Myrkur identifies its intended use as killing the new queen, so the episode introduces not merely a dangerous object but a direct threat to Beatrix.
The Bargain and the Seal
Myrkur frames the blade as a means for Meira to recover her original body and return to the sea. She emphasizes the disparity between Meira’s age—fifty years—and the three hundred years a mermaid ought to live, presenting the offer as a chance to reclaim the rest of Meira’s rightful lifespan and realm. The promised transformation, however, depends on striking the queen through the heart; the gift therefore binds restoration to murder rather than offering an independent escape from Meira’s human condition.
The scheme also depends on the transfer of the Mhuirlan Seal’s guardianship. Myrkur says she foresaw Galahad’s decision to entrust the seal to a woman of elfin blood who could rightfully hold it after marrying a king, and that she sensed the rite as he performed it. If Meira kills the queen and returns to the sea, Myrkur expects to obtain the seal. Her account links Meira’s personal return to the larger contest for control of the seal.
Revelation and Uncertainty
Myrkur predicts that Meira will kill Beatrix, claiming that Meira wants to live and resents the queen for taking the man she loves. These are the Sea Witch’s assertions about Meira’s motives, not confirmation that Meira has accepted the weapon or intends to use it. Galahad immediately rejects the prediction, insisting that Meira would never do such a thing. The episode thus leaves the threat unresolved: the blade has been delivered, but whether Meira will choose the life it promises at such a cost remains contested.
