Melia and Galahad danced together at the royal palace ball

Tide

Galahad Stormcrane and Meira’s dance at the royal ball turns a public entrance into a private emotional revelation. Before the watching court, Galahad leads Meira into the ballroom, chooses her over the opportunity to acknowledge the new king, and draws her into a dance whose increasingly close movements culminate in an embrace. Neither speaks of what the moment means; its decisive turn is registered instead in touch, breath, and Galahad’s sudden, wrenching response when the music stops.

Entrance into the Ballroom

Galahad and Meira approach through the courtyard and the blue-flame marble corridor, accompanied by a horse and a raven. The guards gape at the party and scramble to open the tall glass doors. Beyond them, a hundred dancers are already turning to powerful music. Galahad leads Meira through the threshold and into the light, making their arrival visible to the assembled court.

Meira’s appearance gives that entrance the force of a reveal. Her skin seems to shimmer like mother-of-pearl, while her face carries an otherworldly brightness; coral-colored lips, shining eyes, and cheeks compared to sunrise on water make her look at once vivid and uncanny. Her chestnut hair falls past her waist beneath a silver crown set with sapphires, with lights winking among its waves. Jewels at her throat and breast pulse with inner light. Her gown extends the imagery of the sea: storm-blue fabric rolls behind her like breaking waves, its ragged edges dissolving into white, starlit vapor, while green and aquamarine layers gleam beneath. Gold slippers set with pearls complete the effect. The court sees a transformation made spectacularly public, but the scene soon narrows from the spectacle of her dress to the fragile exchange between the two people wearing it into motion.

A Deliberate Choice

The new king, dressed in sky blue and wearing a circlet of Metern silver, dances with an elegant middle-aged woman in black. His attention catches on Meira, and he keeps looking toward her as he dances. Galahad does not answer that look: without a word or glance to the king, he turns to Meira. Her eyes flash toward his in sudden uncertainty.

Galahad answers without explanation. He places his right hand around her waist, takes her right hand in his left, and steps closer than he has before, pulling her against his chest. The movement is a choice made in full view of the court, whose dancers continue around them. The scene does not present a spoken declaration or establish that the surrounding observers understand what has changed. Instead, the contrast is carried by Galahad’s attention: the king and knights watch, but he looks down at Meira as though the rest of the men do not exist.

The Dance and Its Changing Intimacy

A lone violin begins with a soulful melody, soon joined by viola and cello as the music deepens. Galahad leads Meira through one long, sweeping step and two quicker ones. She follows instinctively, holding him loosely and adjusting her body to his. The magic in her gown hums through his hand; as they turn, its skirts trail around his legs like mist. Their dance unfolds within the larger movement of the ballroom: other couples sweep into a circle, and Galahad draws Meira along with its current beneath the chandeliers.

Their coordination becomes more intimate than the formal steps alone require. Meira closes her eyes, yet her movements continue to match his, as if she can follow him without speech. After they have circled the room, Galahad releases her into a gentle twirl. Rather than draw her back by pulling on her hand, he steps forward to close the distance and gathers her in again. His chin brushes her forehead. He feels the music as immediate as breath, while the crowd recedes from his attention. The dance then opens briefly into the country-dance figures he learned as a boy: they step apart, clasp hands, pass one another, and he turns her beneath his arm.

The repeated turns make closeness feel newly chosen rather than merely imposed by the dance. Meira reaches toward Galahad, and when their hands meet, her touch feels so warm that it almost stings his fingers. He nevertheless enfolds her hands in his. He sends her into another turn, her dress flaring before it wraps around her legs, and she spins back toward him. Without being prompted, she circles his neck with her arm. Galahad’s breath catches; he draws her close, holding her at the waist, and can focus on nothing but her and the song’s heartbeat. The ballroom remains around them, but the dance has made their attention seem to occupy its own space.

The End of the Music

At the crescendo, Galahad and Meira complete one last waltzing turn at the center of the room. The chandeliers sparkle above them, and Meira’s gown foams like breakers on the Metern beaches. Then the music diminishes. They slow together and stop with its final notes. For an extended moment Galahad holds her against his heart; her arm remains around his neck, and their faces are close. He feels her heart beating against his chest and looks over her flushed face, bright eyes, nose, and loose curls before his attention settles on her mouth.

A sudden, wrenching pulse deep inside Galahad interrupts the suspended closeness. The court’s applause for the musicians breaks the quiet, and he jerks his head up and draws a breath as the sense of silence around them shatters. The passage does not resolve the attraction into a declaration: its turn is Galahad’s involuntary recognition of an intensity he has not yet named. The dance moves from public spectacle to wordless mutual responsiveness, then ends with that response exposed to him even as the applause returns him to the court.
