The Seven Original Curse-Breakers

Tide

The Seven Original Curse-Breakers are the founders of the protective system formed by Edel’s Seven Seals. By laying the seals to guard Edel against Curse-Makers from other shores, they established a defense that persists beyond their own time and depends on both the seals’ power and the guardians bound to them.

Founding Purpose

The group’s defining act was to lay seven seals across Edel as protection against Curse-Makers from beyond its shores. The seals are therefore not merely remnants of the founders’ work: they remain an active safeguard against magic that threatens the land.

The danger they were designed to contain is made concrete in the account of a sea witch whose power could otherwise flood Edel and unleash tempests upon it. The seals’ protection operates alongside the power of King Strom, the Mer-king. Together, that power and the seven seals hold back a threat with consequences for the whole land.

The Seals and Their Guardians

Each seal has a guardian whose life is bound to the seal. The guardian’s duty is to watch over it and keep it strong, making the defense established by the founders dependent on continuing individual service as well as the magical structures themselves.

The seals also have a physical presence in the world. One lies beneath the sea outside Prince James’s window; on a clear day, it can be seen as a vast circle of dark stone, perhaps a mile across. The underwater seal gives the founders’ protective work a visible form, even though its function and the guardian’s life-bound obligation are not common knowledge at court.

Custody and Continuing Legacy

The masters at the Fortress of Maith watch over Edel’s Seven Seals. Their oversight preserves a connection between the founders’ ancient protective act and the present-day guardianship system, in which a seal must remain strong through the attention of its appointed guardian.

The group’s legacy thus rests on a continuing chain of protection rather than on a single remembered victory: the seals remain in place, their guardians remain bound to them, and the masters at the Fortress of Maith keep watch. The account establishes the founders’ collective role and the system they created, but does not identify the seven individuals by name.
