Israel Defeats the Canaanites of Arad

Torah

Israel Defeats the Canaanites of Arad is a brief battle narrative in which an initial Israelite defeat is reversed after the people make a vow to the LORD. The victory leads to the destruction of the Canaanite cities and gives the place the name Hormah.

Attack and Vow

As Israel approached by the way of Atharim, the Canaanite king of Arad, who lived in the South, heard of their arrival and fought them. He took some Israelites captive, making the encounter an immediate setback for the traveling people.

Israel then vowed to the LORD that, if delivered, they would utterly destroy the Canaanite cities. The vow links the requested deliverance to a stated outcome for the towns; the account gives no further description of the fighting.

Victory and Aftermath

The LORD hearkened to Israel and delivered the Canaanites into their hands. Israel fulfilled its vow by utterly destroying them and their cities, and the place was called Hormah.

Place in the Narrative

The episode is narrated as a compact reversal: the campaign begins with captives taken by Arad, then turns to Israel’s appeal and victory. Its outcome is recorded through the changed fortunes of the battle, the destruction of the cities, and the place-name Hormah.
