Miriam Punished with Leprosy

Torah

Miriam Punished with Leprosy is the episode in which Miriam and Aaron oppose Moses’ authority and God answers their challenge by distinguishing Moses’ exceptional prophetic standing. Miriam is afflicted with leprosy, Aaron acknowledges their sin, and Moses pleads for her healing; after seven days outside the camp, she is brought back and the people resume their journey.

Challenge to Moses

Miriam and Aaron speak against Moses because he has married a Cushite woman. They also question whether the LORD has spoken only through Moses, noting that He has spoken through them as well. The account identifies Moses as exceptionally meek, while the challenge places both the marriage and the distribution of prophetic authority at issue.

God’s Judgment and Moses’ Intercession

The LORD summons Moses, Aaron, and Miriam to the tent of meeting, then appears in a pillar of cloud and calls Aaron and Miriam forward. He distinguishes ordinary prophecy, made known through visions and dreams, from His relation with Moses: Moses is trusted throughout God’s house, and the LORD speaks with him directly and openly. The rebuke establishes that the siblings’ claim to prophetic speech does not make their standing equivalent to Moses’.

After the LORD departs, Miriam is found afflicted with leprosy. Aaron appeals to Moses, confessing that they have acted foolishly and sinned, and asks that Miriam not be left in that condition. Moses cries to the LORD to heal her. The narrative thus moves from a dispute over authority to a plea for mercy, with Aaron acknowledging the offense and Moses intervening for his sister.

Seven Days Outside the Camp

The LORD decrees that Miriam must remain outside the camp for seven days before being brought back. She is shut out for that period, and the people do not travel until she returns. Only afterward do they leave Hazeroth and camp in the wilderness of Paran. Her punishment therefore interrupts the community’s movement as well as marking the consequences of the challenge to Moses.
