Wild ox
TorahThe Wild ox is a biblical image of formidable strength associated with God’s deliverance and Israel’s power. Balaam invokes its lofty horns to describe the protection of the people brought out of Egypt, and later uses the image again to portray Israel overcoming its enemies.
Image of Protection
In Balaam’s second oracle, the Wild ox represents the strength of God on Israel’s behalf: the God who brought Israel out of Egypt is for the people like the animal’s lofty horns. The image makes the Exodus not only a remembered deliverance but the source of continuing power and defense.
Image of Conquest
Balaam’s later oracle repeats the comparison, linking the Wild ox’s horns to Israel’s attack on hostile nations and its breaking of their resistance. The recurring image gives the animal a distinctive role in the oracles: its strength figures first as divine protection and then as the force by which Israel prevails.
