Longbottoms

Venom

Longbottoms is a popular social venue and the setting for Becky’s welcome-home party for George. Introduced through Elena’s first visit, it is marked by an eccentric sign and, during the party, by a crowd that erupts at Blake’s voice over the microphone.

Reputation and Occasion

Becky plans the party only a couple of days after the group returns home for the summer, choosing Longbottoms as the place to welcome George back. Elena has never been there before; what she knows of it comes from its reputation as a place to spend weekends and holidays. The venue thus enters the story as an established local gathering spot before Elena experiences it firsthand.

Sign and Arrival

The name Longbottoms appears in thick white bubble letters. Attached to the sign is a peculiar little man with a white beard, wearing a tangerine. Elena likes the name, while the figure brings to mind the twins in the Sacred Cavern. That comic image gives her first impression of the venue a personal association rather than making it merely a destination for the party.

Becky drives Elena and Sammy there, and Elena is relieved to climb out of the car in one piece. They take the stairs on the left to the entrance. Becky opens the door and is greeted by a very tall man in his mid-thirties, whose hair has a bronze shimmer; Sammy greets him next. The brief arrival establishes the threshold and the people encountered there, without identifying the man further.

The Welcome-Home Party

Inside, Longbottoms becomes the setting for the celebration of George’s return. When Blake’s voice comes over the microphone asking whether the crowd is ready to have a good time, the room erupts: people cheer and whistle, and Sammy, Becky, and George join in. The abrupt interruption ends Elena’s conversation and shifts attention to the shared excitement of the party.

The scene gives the venue a communal role: it gathers the friends for George’s welcome and provides a public space for Blake to address the room. Its distinctive sign frames Elena’s arrival with odd humor; the crowd’s immediate response supplies the evening’s larger mood of exuberance.
