DL kills Takeshi with the Death Palm
VinelandDL kills Takeshi Fumimota with the Death Palm in an encounter whose significance reaches beyond its apparent ending: Takeshi remembers the lethal touch not as a clean break between desire and violence, but as an experience in which the two remain disturbingly entangled.
The Encounter Remembered
At the mountain retreat, Takeshi recognizes DL as the woman who killed him the other day. His recollection fixes on their encounter at Haru no Depaato: DL was astride him, her long legs and backlit hair vivid in his memory, while her brown-lacquered nails traced the meridians of his body. The caress was also the means of killing him. The scene makes no separation between intimacy and attack; the same remembered gesture carries both.
Death and Bodily Memory
Takeshi’s response to the memory refuses the expected recoil. Although the attack had left him technically dead, recalling DL produces an involuntary sexual response rather than simple fear or aversion. The contradiction gives the episode its disturbing charge: the body registers desire even when the mind recalls that this woman killed him. The narration places a lethal act inside an erotic memory without resolving the tension between them.
Recognition at the Retreat
The recollection returns when Takeshi reaches the Kunoichi retreat and sees DL again. Recognition brings the danger of their earlier encounter into the present, but his attention is already caught by the memory of her. His joking claim that he is already dead and his ukulele performance follow this moment of recognition, turning the aftermath of the killing into a performance of apparent harmlessness. In this passage, death is both a past fact and the dark premise of Takeshi’s renewed approach to DL.
