Spakums
WaspThe Spakums enter the account through the reported destruction of their fleets: a repeated wartime announcement that becomes a public claim, not an independently confirmed fact in these passages. Their limited depiction places them within a conflict where news of fleets and the credibility of what is said about them carry strategic weight.
Fleet Destruction and Public Reports
An old man sharply insists that “the Spakum fleets have been destroyed,” making Mowry the focus of an address to everyone around them. He stresses that the claim has been repeated on the radio. The scene gives the announcement a social life: it is not merely a report but an assertion voiced before a group, with Mowry made its immediate audience. The passage does not establish whether the fleets really have been destroyed; it shows that the claim is circulating and that listeners are being asked to reckon with it.
War and Manufactured Perception
Elsewhere, the wartime account describes the Periboob as a deception that depends on preparation and on controlling what the enemy believes. At the outbreak of war, the enemy was allowed to obtain top-secret plans, setting the stage for the device; the intended effect was that Jaimecans would draw conclusions from the sight of it. This does not establish a direct connection between the Spakums and the Periboob operation. It does, however, place the report of the Spakum fleets’ destruction within a narrative where military events and information about them both shape perception.
