Saro University is the preeminent center of learning on the planet Kalgash, and its faculty members are the first to uncover the astronomical and archaeological evidence that a devastating global catastrophe—a total eclipse of the sun Dovim by the invisible satellite Kalgash Two—is imminent, an event that will plunge the world into total Darkness and trigger mass insanity and worldwide firestorms. The university's Observatory, its various academic departments, and its faculty become the epicenter of the struggle to understand, predict, and warn civilization of the coming Nightfall, while also becoming a target of the fanatical Apostles of Flame and the panicked populace.

Identity and Structure

Saro University is located in Saro City, the capital of the Federal Republic of Saro, and its campus includes the Saro University Observatory, which dominates the forested slopes of Observatory Mount. The university is a major employer of intellectuals, including the psychologist Sheerin 501 of the Department of Psychology, the astronomer Beenay 25 of the Observatory, and the archaeologist Siferra 89 of the Department of Archaeology. The institution is governed by a faculty structure that includes a Board of Proctors, which has the authority to post signs declaring "NO TRESPASSING" on university property, such as the site of the old particle accelerator that becomes the Sanctuary. The university's prestige is such that its faculty members are called upon as expert consultants, as when Sheerin is summoned to the Jonglor Municipal Psychiatric Institute to investigate the Tunnel of Mystery incident.

Key Faculty and Their Roles

The university's most prominent figure is Athor 77, the director of the Observatory, a towering figure in astronomy who formulated the Theory of Universal Gravitation. His protégé, Beenay 25, is an assistant professor in astronomy who discovers the orbital anomaly that leads to the prediction of the eclipse. Siferra 89, a professor in the Department of Archaeology, conducts the excavation at the Hill of Thombo on the Sagikan Peninsula, uncovering evidence of repeated civilization-destroying fires at two-thousand-year intervals. Sheerin 501, a professor in the Department of Psychology, is the university's ranking authority on Darkness-induced mental disorders and provides the psychological analysis of the coming catastrophe. The university also employs specialists like Mudrin 505 of the Department of Paleography, who attempts to decipher the Thombo Tablets, and Balik 338, the chief stratigrapher on Siferra's expedition. The university's faculty is not immune to internal conflict; Siferra's Thombo findings stir up controversy within her own department, as colleagues like Hilliko and Brangin express passionate skepticism.

The Observatory and the Eclipse Prediction

The Saro University Observatory is the physical and intellectual heart of the scientific effort to understand the coming catastrophe. It houses the university's main telescope, computers, and the Chart Room where Beenay, Faro 24, and Yimot 70 conduct their calculations. The Observatory is also a place of deep reverence for Beenay, who pauses before the manuscript of Athor's Theory of Universal Gravitation as if before a sacred object. The Observatory becomes the site of the climactic confrontation on the night of the eclipse, where the scientists gather to photograph the event. Athor, despite his age, throws himself into the work of deriving the Kalgash Two hypothesis, working sixteen-hour days. The Observatory is also the target of the mob incited by the Apostles of Flame, who storm the building, destroy the equipment, and kill Athor.

The Sanctuary and Post-Catastrophe Role

In preparation for the predicted catastrophe, the university establishes a Sanctuary in the abandoned particle accelerator facility midway between the campus and Saro City. This underground chamber is equipped with food, water, shelter, and weapons, and houses about three hundred people, primarily the families of Observatory staff and certain faculty members. After the Nightfall event, the Sanctuary is abandoned when its inhabitants decide to march to the provisional government at Amgando National Park. The Sanctuary is then taken over by Altinol 111 and his Fire Patrol, who use it as their headquarters. In the aftermath, the university's role as a source of authority is contested; some survivors, like the crazed squatters who kill Sheerin, blame the university for causing the Darkness and the Stars, while others, like the border guards of Restoration Province, value university people for their intelligence and ability to compose diplomatic messages. The university's surviving faculty, including Beenay and Siferra, ultimately decide to ally with Folimun 66 and the Apostles of Flame, seeing it as the only viable path to restoring order and preserving knowledge for the next cycle.
