Posey Duke—Edward Duke

Barkskins

Posey Duke—Edward Duke is a discreet extramarital intimacy that grows out of a dinner gathering and becomes part of the daily life of the Duke household. Its significance lies in the contrast between Edward’s public, business-minded account of his connection to Posey and the private signals James Duke notices beneath the family’s polite social surface.

A Dinner That Draws Them Together

At dinner, Edward sits beside Phineas Breeley and talks with him as if they were old friends, while also turning readily to Posey. James watches Edward gaze into her eyes with an openness and charm he has never seen in him before. The evening brings business, family connection, and personal attraction into the same room, though Edward appears to understand the encounter chiefly as a promising new acquaintance.

James tries to make that connection explicit by pointing out that Edward and Breeley share interests. Edward answers that he is delighted to have met a New Brunswick lumberman with practical knowledge of the timber trade, adding that Breeley is now more or less connected to the family. His account is socially plausible, but James sees a more intimate current running beneath it. When Posey slips her hand below the table, Edward’s startled face turns rose-red; Freegrace notices too, marking the gesture as conspicuous even within the crowded dinner scene.

Business as a Social Cover

After the women leave for Posey’s parlor and China tea, Edward draws James aside to praise Breeley as a potential board member. He describes him as practical, opposed to timber thieves, and valuable to the business, then commends Posey as an enchanting woman who understands the trade. Edward calls father and daughter an extraordinary pair, treating their family connection and commercial usefulness as the explanation for his enthusiasm.

James hears the gap between that explanation and what he has witnessed. Edward thanks him for bringing everyone together, while James is left with an image he would rather not acknowledge. The scene does not establish the full extent of the intimacy, but it makes James’s suspicion central: a business introduction has become the acceptable public frame for a relationship he believes is more compromising.

A Continuing, Carefully Unspecified Closeness

In the weeks after the dinner, Edward increasingly visits the house to take tea with Posey. He finds reasons to invite her out, including seeing an unusual object excavated by road builders, and asks her advice about a gift he intends for Lydia. They are together almost every afternoon, either in Posey’s parlor or riding outdoors; Phineas is often with them. The repeated visits turn a charged evening into a sustained pattern of companionship, while the presence of Posey’s father helps keep the meetings within a respectable social setting.

James refuses to learn more. His deliberate withdrawal leaves the relationship’s private boundaries unresolved, but the recurrence of the visits gives his unease a concrete basis. Edward’s attentions are not limited to a single flirtatious exchange: they become a regular part of Posey’s afternoons and of the family’s wider social and business life.

Meaning Within the Duke Household

The relationship is presented through James’s observation rather than through direct access to Posey’s or Edward’s private thoughts. Glances, a hand beneath the table, a blush, and the rhythm of repeated visits carry what the conversation about lumber and board membership does not say openly. That contrast makes discretion part of the relation’s form: social respectability supplies its cover, while James reads the bodily signs as evidence of a concealed attachment.

The evidence leaves the exact nature and consequences of the intimacy unstated. What it does establish is its persistence and James’s decision not to pursue the matter beyond what he has already seen. Posey and Edward’s closeness therefore remains an acknowledged suspicion within the household, sustained in public by ordinary visits and business talk, and privately by the signals James cannot comfortably ignore.
