Disappearance of the Verden Colony

Blackwater

The Disappearance of the Verden Colony is the unexplained vanishing of a North Sea Federation settlement that had announced it was leaving the solar system. Its history becomes newly immediate to Rocco Swift when he discovers the name Verdun on the hull of a derelict settlement and, nearby, a cylinder marked VX-73. The link is suggestive but unconfirmed: Rocco learns that the vanished colony bore the same name, yet chooses not to tell Valentin Fulbright what he has found while their mission remains underway.

The Settlement in the Debris

Rocco’s discovery begins amid a landscape marked by damage and decay. Grease-stained patches interrupt the dirt where grass once grew, while barren trunks stand shriveled by radiation and vacuum. Flying out through a gap, he sees a shattered docking collar drifting with fragments of waste rock. He concludes that the collar probably broke when it fell into the zone, so it does not explain what happened to the settlement. The visible wreckage offers clues to physical damage, but no account of the colony’s fate.

To inspect the structure, Rocco flies alongside its outer hull and switches on the floodlights mounted on his Panzerter’s shoulders. Their harsh glare reveals enormous letters, still legible despite micrometeorite impacts and dust from the shoal zone: Verdun. He repeats the name, sensing that it is familiar without yet knowing why. The ruined settlement is thus identified first by a surviving word on its hull, not by records or by a living witness.

The VX-73 Cylinder

As Rocco begins to turn away, the floodlights catch another reflection on the settlement’s surface. He jets over to investigate. A tall cylinder, taller than his Panzerter, protrudes from the hull near the settlement’s midsection; pipes run from it into the structure, their sealed joints marked by bulky welts resembling torpedoes. The object’s placement and connections make it conspicuous, but the scene does not establish its purpose.

Rocco lands beside the cylinder and notices a handle scaled for a Panzerter, just above shoulder height relative to his machine. He approaches cautiously. In the floodlights he reads VX-73 beneath a skull and crossbones inside a yellow-and-black triangle. The hazard marking and machine-sized handle make the object seem significant and potentially dangerous, yet Rocco does not identify what it contains or how it relates to the settlement’s disappearance. The clue sharpens the mystery without resolving it.

Verdun’s Earlier Disappearance

The colony’s history emerges later, during a practical pause in Rocco’s mission. He and Fulbright connect a padded siphon line to the Martian’s fuel valve; as the main tanks depressurize, frozen reaction-mass pebbles are forced through the thick line. With Fulbright standing nearby, Rocco asks whether Verdun means anything to him. The question joins the discovery on the hull to a name Rocco has been unable to place.

Fulbright gives the name two histories. Verdun was the site of a major battle in the first Earth war; a century later, a North Sea Federation settlement bearing the same name announced that it was leaving the solar system and then disappeared. His account establishes the colony’s last known public declaration and its unexplained absence, but provides no explanation for either. The settlement Rocco has found may be connected to that vanished colony, though the conversation does not prove that they are one and the same.

The Withheld Clue

When Fulbright asks why he brought up the name, Rocco says he only thought he had heard it somewhere and could not remember where. Privately, he decides not to mention VX-73. He will investigate the possible connection after the battle; first, he intends to put Fulbright in the jump seat and eventually link up with the Prosperity & Labor. The discovery is therefore not shared as part of their immediate coordination, and Rocco’s planned inquiry remains deferred.

The episode ends with two kinds of uncertainty held together: Fulbright’s brief historical account of a colony that announced its departure and vanished, and Rocco’s physical discovery of a ruined settlement bearing the same name and a marked cylinder on its hull. The novel supplies no confirmation that VX-73 caused the disappearance, nor any resolution of what happened to the colony. Instead, the name turns an isolated wreck into a possible trace of a much larger mystery, while Rocco’s silence keeps that lead open beyond the scene.
