Promise Shallows Engagement

Blackwater

The Promise Shallows Engagement is the 2 November 2135 battle below Island Fredrick in the Promise shoal zone, where Tharcian forces use misdirection and layered attacks to resist a Union advance. It is fought not only with railguns, torpedoes, and Panzerters, but through efforts to distort what each side can see and infer: false civilian signals, concealed formations, and a later bluff all shape the battle. When the defense nearly fails, the arrival of Danubia reverses the danger and brings Marcell to the realization that his side has won.

Causes and Deception

The engagement grows out of a contest over Tharcian territory and infrastructure. Union planners identify a pilot-training settlement and the flows of food and trade through Promise as strategically important. Their task force intends to disrupt Tharcian plans concerning Phobos, using five reconnaissance and electronic-warfare cruisers to disguise its approach. The proposed deception is to mimic civilian ships fleeing the Amazon Sea and to manipulate the timing of reports reaching Deimos, making the enemy believe an attack began hours earlier than it did.

The Union formation also uses radar shadows and electronic countermeasures to hide the larger ships behind light cruisers and smaller vessels. The apparent abundance of small craft conceals three battlecruisers and two heavy cruisers. The plan makes information itself a weapon: Union commanders seek to induce a premature Tharcian response, while their ships conceal their actual scale and composition.

Marcell’s side recognizes that the supposed civilian flotilla entering the system from the Amazon Sea is suspiciously uniform and does not appear to be fleeing at full speed. Schuster assesses that the ships are masking their drive signatures. Marcell reasons that the Orbit Patrol has electronic-warfare assets, and that a Union vessel revealing its intent through targeting sensors could expose the disguise. Yet the Blackwater’s preparations have a serious weakness: although the ship carries spare parts, fuel, and food, the expected Panzerters have not arrived, sharply reducing its available firepower.

The Opening Exchange

At 0245 Colony Time on 2 November 2135, Marcell watches the coming battle from the bridge of the TNV Blackwater in the shoal zone below Island Fredrick. Tharcian torpedo frigates angle their bows to send torpedoes nearly vertically into the approaching Union force. Escorts move away from the torpedo boats, then pass through the shoal zone and return in a maneuver intended to make the Union mistake them for fleeing torpedo craft. Duncan Glenn and his diversion force position themselves behind the enemy search pattern. If the Union battlecarrier becomes isolated, the destroyers are to attack its railguns or launch decks; Glenn’s specific target is its engineering deck, with the aim of disabling its drive and reactors or frightening its captain into withdrawing.

The first torpedo impacts inflict severe losses on smaller Union ships. A corvette breaks apart when its atmosphere ignites, and debris strikes nearby vessels. Another ship is destroyed, while the resulting debris begins intercepting torpedoes before they can hit their priority targets. The Union’s point defenses fire on the incoming weapons; the struggle takes place amid the shoal zone’s obscuring debris and Tharcian escorts making quick sensor sweeps before withdrawing into it.

The fight’s uncertainty is not just a matter of what the ships can detect. Marcell has not included the Orbit Patrol in his plan, and its cutters are smaller and less heavily armed than even the Union corvettes. When two cutters emerge behind the escorts and head for a Union reconnaissance cruiser, Marcell is slow to respond. He orders them back, but the Union corvettes continue after the escorts, and the reconnaissance cruiser brings its point defenses to bear. Their intervention exposes the risk of a battle plan built around forces whose capabilities do not match those of the main combatants.

Mines and Countermoves

By 0445 Colony Time, additional Union ships are combing the minefield, including reconnaissance cruisers, corvettes, destroyers, and another battlecarrier. Marcell responds with a three-missile sequence: two minelayers followed by an anti-ship missile, all aimed at the lead vessel. The ships’ forward momentum is meant to conceal the launch. The mines use magnets to attach to passing spacecraft, but sensors distinguish friendly identification signals; once attached, their adjustable explosives form a shaped charge capable of breaching a hull.

The tactic depends on forcing the Union to slow down and fire its point defenses manually while searching the minefield. That makes the ships less able to respond to fast missiles. Initially, Union gunners engage the approaching weapons, then reduce their fire as the first minelayer begins dispersing mines. Marcell judges that the commander mistakes the third missile for another minelayer and saves point-defense ammunition for a more immediate danger. The anti-ship missile releases megathermal warheads into a destroyer; its drive fails and the ship splits apart. The success is a consequence of the adversary’s interpretation of the sequence as much as of the weapons themselves.

Marcell also tries to shift the Union’s expectations through a false open-channel broadcast. After recognizing that the enemy is concealing its intent with a reverse Gray-stack maneuver, he orders the squadron to follow the Union formation and announces that a large task force from the belt is five hours away, supposedly after refueling at Deimos. He does not know whether such a squadron is present. Jamming and interference prevent certainty, but he hopes the Union will hear the claim and have to reconsider its options. The broadcast’s purpose is to make the enemy react to Tharcian action rather than dictate the terms of the fight.

Transport Operations and Ground Fighting

The wider battle includes Union military transports, which Rocco identifies as a valuable target. His Panzerters pursue them as they dive steeply and use their engines at full power; their endurance-oriented propulsion makes them less agile than combat craft. Rocco’s attack is also constrained by unreliable ammunition: when Whaler reports that an entire salvo consists of dud rounds and that the magazines may be faulty, Rocco turns to fighting the enemy Panzerters directly.

At the transports, the danger shifts from fleet maneuvers to a close struggle around the wreckage. Rocco’s forces discover an older Tharcian Panzerter clinging to the most intact transport, confirming Fulbright’s suspicion that the transports conceal something significant. Roland reaches a transport and reports that he has found a survivor but is surrounded by hostile Panzerters, then lays a trap and destroys three Union machines with a directed beam before moving behind debris to find another approach. During the fighting that follows, Roland disables Val’s axe and damages Val’s machine. Afterward, Charlotte places a hand on Roland’s shoulder as he turns toward the open end of the colony, where another Union machine is waiting. The engagement therefore links the fleet’s struggle over transport targets to the danger faced by individuals at the colony.

Reversal and Victory

For Marcell, the battle reaches its most dangerous point when further incoming fire threatens the Blackwater, and he doubts that the ship can endure much more. Tharcian destroyers then emerge behind the approaching Union capital ship and rapidly break apart its escorts. Tharcian Panzerters join the attack, and one unit launches a torpedo into the Union battlecarrier’s launch bay, damaging its catapult mechanisms.

The battlecruiser Danubia then emerges from the shoal zone. Marcell briefly mistakes its appearance for the return of the lost Vespa before realizing that it is Vespa’s sister ship. Against the Union battlecarrier Prosperity & Labor, Danubia’s broad, overlapping fields of fire provide a decisive advantage. Railgun shells penetrate the Union ship, and the bombardment destroys its structure. Though some Union Panzerters escape, the battlecarrier is split apart when Danubia’s prow strikes it. Danubia then pursues the other battlecarrier, Knowledge & Industry, which retreats with its engines cut and burns away from the shoal zone’s minefield.

With the Union force in retreat and Tharcian reinforcements having changed the balance, Marcell orders recovery operations, asks for Duncan Glenn to be brought aboard if he is alive, and requests battle-damage assessments from the ships that have disengaged. He allows himself a small smile as he understands the result: the Tharcian side has won. The victory follows a sequence in which deception creates openings, mines and missile timing punish an incorrect inference, and the arrival of a more heavily armed ship resolves a battle that Marcell’s forces had been close to losing.
