Rocco's Attack on the Union Transport Convoy

Blackwater

Rocco's Attack on the Union Transport Convoy is a space engagement on 2 November 2135 in which Rocco turns a pursuit of Union military transports into a cascading collision, then faces a counterattack by the new Mark V Panther Panzerters. The action shows both the leverage of a pilot who can read a formation for its weakest point and the limits of victory as an endpoint: even after the Union force is disrupted, Rocco is recalled for another mission before he can return to the Grain & Steel.

Setting and Mission

The episode is dated 2 November 2135 and takes place in the space near the Pommern Cluster. Rocco is flying with his squadron and identifies six armored transports as they come into view. Their small number of point-defense guns, only four across the dorsal and ventral hulls, marks them as vessels not designed to operate without an escort. Their size—comparable to cruisers—suggests that the convoy is carrying something important, and Rocco commits to the pursuit even as its escort approaches from the sun’s direction.

The transports burn hard on a steep course, but Rocco judges that their engines and thrusters prioritize endurance over performance. His Panzerters approach from below toward the convoy’s starboard side, while the Union escorts come in along its dorsal hull. He recognizes an escort carrier and roughly a dozen frigates, including a converted ice hauler of a kind he has encountered at the Sea of January. The Union carrier cuts its engine and uses retro-thrusters to establish zero gravity, preparing for launch operations. Rocco calculates that his force cannot reach it in time to prevent those operations while also maintaining pressure on the transports; instead of treating the split as a reason to withdraw, he welcomes the added challenge.

The Convoy’s Collapse

Rocco orders his second flight to break off and engage the frigates moving to intercept. He continues toward the convoy and attacks the lead ship once it enters range. His rifle penetrates its relatively weak hull, but the damaged vessel keeps advancing. Rocco then changes from ranged fire to close assault: he stows the rifle, draws his boarding axes, and approaches the transport from a point-defense blind spot.

At the ship’s surface, Rocco cuts open part of its engineering section and exposes the reactor to space. The reactor shuts down automatically; the transport loses power, and its crew can no longer restore it in time. With thrust gone, the ship tumbles into the vessel above and behind it. The formation has left gaps for exhaust plumes rather than room to recover from a disabled ship, so the first impact starts a chain reaction. Successive transports collide, and their own mass overwhelms the light defenses that might otherwise have protected them. The attack therefore does more than disable a single target: Rocco’s strike changes the convoy’s motion and turns its tightly arranged formation into the mechanism of its wider disruption.

Escorts and Panther Counterattack

Irons warns Rocco of danger at his nine-thirty as he moves away from the collisions. The pursuing threat includes Union frigates and a new type of Panzerter. Rocco’s targeting computer identifies the machine as a Mark V Panther, distinguishing it from the Mark IVs his side has fought previously. The Panthers are faster, though Rocco observes that they are not as agile; their heavy rifle rounds make a direct hit dangerous, while his fire strikes their shields without immediately stopping them.

When two Panthers pursue him, Rocco uses a corkscrewing dive to make them follow his line of movement. He fires upward as he climbs past them, then attaches a breacher grenade to one Panther. The shaped charge destroys that machine. The second pilot reacts quickly enough to shoot down Rocco’s next grenade, but its explosion gives Rocco an opening to close the distance and attack at point-blank range. He fires into the Panther and kicks away from it before it explodes. Meanwhile, the Tharcian ships are attempting to disengage: some frigates are leaking atmosphere, others have been disabled, and Rocco’s remaining pilots are forcing the Panthers into dogfights that appear unfavorable to them.

Outcome and Significance

The convoy attack is a tactical success, but the text does not present it as a clean or final victory. Rocco’s actions have broken the transport formation and helped drive the opposing ships toward disengagement, yet his response is disappointment rather than celebration. An encrypted burst from the Grain & Steel arrives before he can return for a hot meal and a shower; he still has another mission to complete.

That abrupt continuation gives the encounter its particular shape. Rocco demonstrates an ability to adapt tactics from disabling a transport at close range to evading and destroying faster, heavier Panzerters, while the convoy’s collapse makes the consequences of a single propulsion failure decisive for ships traveling in formation. But success does not free him from the campaign’s demands. The disrupted convoy, the new Panther threat, and Rocco’s immediate reassignment leave the engagement as one action in a larger and still-unfinished operation.
