Fight for the Debris Field Supply Drone

Blackwater

The Fight for the Debris Field Supply Drone turns a contested piece of cargo into a test of military readiness and responsibility toward civilians. At 2200 Colony Time on 2 November 2135, Roland Horn follows astrogation data to wreckage and an encrypted signal, then volunteers to investigate the supply drone. The attempt brings him into combat with a distinctive Union Panzerter, but the arrival of Tharcian vessels and a torpedo weapon changes the balance: Roland withdraws toward the Blackwater while the cutters leave with the drone.

Mission and immediate stakes

The operation grows from a wider supply crisis. The Blackwater has taken on spare parts, fuel, and food, but not the Panzerters it was supposed to receive; the missing machines leave its available firepower diminished. Its commander, Henri Marcell, has to consider not just the squadron’s fighting capacity but the needs of civilians caught in the same emergency. He orders Schuster to collect every ship’s food and water totals and the military vessels’ ammunition counts, knowing he may have to choose between rationing his own people and distributing supplies to civilians. In that setting, a supply drone is a practical necessity, not merely a tactical prize.

Roland’s own mission begins among the wreckage of marine landing craft. He checks the astrogation data supplied by Altman against his instruments and panorama cameras, expecting the search to concern distress signals from assault shuttles. The sight of a drifting hand among the wreckage raises an unanswered question about the marines’ fate, but the encrypted comm-key he has received makes him suspect that the search has another purpose as well. When Charlotte Huber sends him an image, he identifies a heat source and decides that the team will take what they find after investigating it, despite not yet knowing how.

Contact with the drone

The prospect of claiming the drone quickly becomes a practical problem. Roland asks how he is supposed to do so when the objects are so large. Gunnery Sergeant Hoffmann explains that the Orbit Patrol has an answer: the drone has an inspection feature that can be used in the operation. Roland accepts the assignment and asks for the navigation points. At his position, he adjusts his communications array to relay a signal; an encrypted transmission appears, but the attempt times out, apparently because of a delay between the cutter and his machine.

The signal failure coincides with approaching thruster flares. Roland spots the approaching force before Gunnery Sergeant Hoffmann orders him to abort, warning that he cannot be allowed to fight the Union pilots. The decision sets the episode’s humanitarian and military pressures against one another. The wider fleet is reckoning with limited provisions and civilian need, while Roland, personally committed to preventing starvation, is told to break off rather than risk an engagement that might jeopardize the mission and his survival.

The Union Panzerter and the counterattack

An enemy Panzerter attacks Roland before he can disengage. The impact throws him from his perch and sends him tumbling through dust toward a hauler; alarms sound as rounds hit his machine. Once he regains control, he recognizes that the other Union units are holding above the supply drone, while the attacker is different: green like a can of Highland Sap, and flying unlike the other Panzerters he has encountered. Its distinctive movement makes it a particular threat rather than just another unit in the force.

Roland tries to bring his weapon to bear, but the enemy disappears from his view and returns with a charging kick. His armor is damaged, and he recognizes that he needs to break contact. The encounter underscores the gap between his resolve and his capacity to dictate the fight: a willingness to help civilians cannot cancel the danger posed by a more effective opponent or the danger of continuing alone.

Intervention and outcome

The battle changes when a torpedo frigate and Orbit Patrol cutters rise from the lower reaches of the shoal zone. Their point defenses constrain the Union Panzerters, and the torpedo ship fires a payload that initially seems easy for the enemy to evade. The torpedoes then release thousands of magnetized pellets, golf-ball-sized projectiles that damage joints, sensors, and fuel tanks. Several Union units are disabled. The weapon turns the space around the drone into a new kind of hazard: rather than relying on a direct hit, it spreads material capable of disrupting the machines’ vulnerable components.

Roland takes cover behind a vintage iceberg hauler, one of the ships associated with his homeworld’s oceans. Once the immediate danger passes, he limps back toward the Blackwater. The cutters disappear below the shoal zone with the cargo drone. The operation therefore ends with the drone removed from the contested area, but the evidence does not establish that Roland personally secures it or that the civilians receive its contents. His return is a withdrawal from the immediate fight, not a narrated resolution of the larger supply crisis.

Logistics, duty, and the limits of initiative

The episode places combat inside a chain of material dependencies: ships need food and water, military vessels need ammunition, and the Blackwater has spare parts and fuel but lacks the Panzerters expected to strengthen it. Marcell’s inventory order and his unresolved rationing choice frame Roland’s action as part of a fleet-wide problem rather than an isolated act of heroism. The competing needs are explicit, but the account does not say how Marcell ultimately allocates provisions.

Roland’s declaration that he will not let anyone starve gives the mission its moral urgency, while the abort order marks a real limit on individual initiative. He volunteers, attempts to relay the encrypted signal, and stays engaged long enough to face an attack; nevertheless, he survives by taking cover and returning to the Blackwater as the cutters carry the drone away. The conclusion holds two outcomes together: the Union force loses several Panzerters to the new torpedo payload, and the supply drone leaves with Tharcian forces, while the question of whether that cargo reaches those who need it remains open.
