Operation Bumblebee

Bloodhounds

Operation Bumblebee is Avon and Somerset police’s burglary-prevention campaign, led by John Wigfull and built around the analysis of reported break-ins. Its work expands from publicizing prevention and tracking crime figures to an urgent security review at the gallery; that new assignment also pulls four officers from the murder squad, including Peter Diamond’s best detective, Julie Hargreaves.

Purpose and Method

Wigfull took over Operation Bumblebee as head of CID operations. At a police meeting, he reported that the publicity campaign against burglary had reduced crime figures and presented it as an outstanding success. The campaign’s practical method joined public messaging to an internal system: reported break-ins went into the Bumblebee team’s computer, called the hive, where the results were analyzed to decide on initiatives against burglars. The name made the system sound playful, but its purpose was operational—turning recorded offences into targeted prevention.

The Gallery Security Review

After a later urgent meeting was called, the Assistant Chief Constable ordered a review of security at the gallery to prevent a major theft. Operation Bumblebee was made responsible, with Wigfull told to liaise with Impregnable. The review was to cover the Turner painting in the upstairs permanent collection and its points of vulnerability: windows, roof, and other access routes. The team was also instructed to check that alarms worked and guards knew of the threat. Wigfull asked whether the objective was to scare the thieves off; the Assistant Chief Constable framed the assignment as crime prevention rather than a contest for credit.

Staffing and Consequences

The gallery assignment altered the murder squad’s staffing. The Assistant Chief Constable ordered four squad members to be seconded immediately to Operation Bumblebee, and Wigfull selected them himself. His choices included Inspector Julie Hargreaves, whom Peter Diamond regarded as his best detective. Diamond objected that he could not release her; Wigfull insisted that he needed a woman. The order thus gave the campaign a wider remit while directly reducing Diamond’s control over his own team.
