The forbidden zone

Decoded

The forbidden zone names the dangerous boundary Rong Jinzhen crosses in cryptography: first by turning toward the field’s history, then by taking on the decipherment of BLACK. Its force comes from a contradiction. Knowledge of earlier work might help him find a way through the cipher maze, yet the profession treats historical knowledge and the crossing between creating and breaking ciphers as perilous territory. Rong’s two incursions therefore begin as acts of intellectual choice and end as burdens imposed by his own reputation.

A Boundary in the Cryptographic Forest

The novel presents cryptography’s history as a lonely forest with no safe, open route. Its practitioners cannot simply follow the paths made by their predecessors; old work is framed as a burden that later generations must avoid, and the field’s history becomes a landscape of closed doors and traps. Against that convention, Rong studies what came before. The forbidden zone is thus not a physical location but a professional and intellectual boundary: the point at which a cryptographer risks using the very history that the field teaches its practitioners to leave behind.

The ordinary method of decipherment is described as systematic elimination. Intelligence agents gather information, and the cryptographer forms hypotheses by constructing possible keys and locks. The process is laborious, but its caution makes it particularly dependable against high-level ciphers. Rong does not want to proceed only in this conventional way. By entering the historical forest, he hopes to narrow the field of possibilities; even eliminating half of ten thousand byroads would improve the prospects of a search. The risk is that historical knowledge may guide him through traps set by earlier cryptographers—or lead him into them.

The First Entry: History and PURPLE

Rong’s first passage into the forbidden zone is voluntary. He immerses himself in cryptographic history and stands, figuratively, on the shoulders of earlier practitioners. This makes his approach exceptional: he does not merely gather clues and test hypotheses but seeks orientation in a discipline whose practitioners are described as having lost the mirror of history and the community that shared work can create. The anticipated reward is a narrower search; the danger is that the old paths are themselves hazardous.

His success with PURPLE gives the risk a wider consequence. The Unit 701 narrator explains that cracking PURPLE made the adversary more cautious and circumspect, reducing the slips that might expose a cipher. The achievement did not simply solve one problem; it changed the conditions under which subsequent ciphers could be attacked. In this sense, entry into the forbidden zone brings both exceptional insight and an altered landscape for other cryptographers.

The Forced Return and Its Cost

The second entry is unlike the first. Rong is assigned responsibility for deciphering BLACK, although the narrator describes an unwritten law of cryptography: an individual should either create ciphers or crack them. Rong’s ability to do both is presented as a source of danger, because the work of creating and destroying ciphers threatens to fracture the mind that performs it. The narrator believes Rong’s mind already belongs to PURPLE and suggests that taking on BLACK should depend on his ability to reconstitute it.

Instead, Unit 701 places its faith in Rong’s exceptional talent and in his capacity to rebuild his mind. The narrator acknowledges that ordinary rules seem inadequate to explain what Rong can do, but that faith does not make the assignment harmless. Rong is driven back into the forbidden zone by other people’s expectations and by his own reputation. His earlier lightness at work gives way to intense strain: the narrator observes his black hair turning grey and his stature shrinking as the BLACK problem bears down on him. The zone has changed from a terrain he chose to explore into a labyrinth that seems to carry him deeper as he tries to tear the cipher apart—and, in the narrator’s description, to smash his own mind apart with it.

BLACK and the False Lock

The eventual solution makes the boundary’s danger sharply ironic. After prolonged work on BLACK, Rong discovers that its cryptographic key is zero. The key is associated with a leather attaché case, but the decisive realization is that BLACK has no genuine lock: what appeared to be a locked door is only a façade, and it opens with a push. The resolution is not a triumph of accumulating more keys and testing more doors; it exposes the apparent lock itself as a false premise.

That revelation does not erase the cost of the return. The narrator frames the solution as astonishing precisely because the cipher had seemed to demand an impossible passage, while its key was so simple that it was difficult to trust even after it worked. The forbidden zone therefore holds two linked meanings: it is the perilous territory where established methods and rules seem to fail, and the place where a hidden simplicity can overturn the whole search. Rong’s achievement opens BLACK, but the narrative emphasizes how heavily the journey has pressed upon him.
