Caulbearers
FirebugCaulbearers are beings who use a magical covering, or caul, to conceal themselves and alter what others perceive. Through Bianca’s demonstration, that concealment proves capable of reaching beyond invisibility: she can also affect smell and subtly reshape sound. Her abilities turn a power initially dismissed as a way to sneak off with stolen goods into a means of hiding a large raiding party and restoring the element of surprise.
Identity and Nature
When Alistair waits for her to explain herself, Bianca resists being made to perform, then identifies herself as a caulbearer. Her reluctance matters to the scene: the ability is not introduced through a detached account of a creature type, but through someone who does not want to be treated as an exhibit. Once she reveals what she is, however, Bianca demonstrates her power on her own terms, making its practical reach clear to the gathered group.
The term prompts Olive to think of babies born with material covering their faces. Bianca corrects that understanding by describing a covering, while Duncan adds that he has seen caulbearers throw a caul over themselves. What distinguishes Bianca in his experience is the extent of her concealment: he has never seen one trick more than one sense. The scene therefore offers both a basic image of the caul and a pointed indication that Bianca's abilities exceed what Duncan has previously witnessed.
Bianca's Demonstration
Bianca first disappears from sight. The room responds with surprise, and people draw back from the chair she has left empty. Sid, unable to smell her, asks where she went. Bianca reappears with her face close to his; he scrambles away, while she laughs softly. The sequence makes concealment tangible through other people's reactions: her absence is not merely a claim about magical ability but an abrupt disruption of the room's shared sense of where a person is.
She explains that she can manipulate sound as well, provided it is soft enough. People near her still hear something, but she can make it a sound that does not seem out of place. The qualification is important: her skill is not presented as an unlimited silencing of everything around her. Rather, she can alter a quiet sound so that it blends into its surroundings, extending the cover of the caul from sight and smell to the interpretation of what can be heard.
Bianca then demonstrates that her power can affect someone else's perception. With a circular movement of her hand, she makes Olive unable to smell the people she ordinarily tracks by scent. Olive looks around, asks where they are, and calls for Ikka and Sid. Her fear intensifies when the sense she relies on fails her. Bianca reverses the motion, and Olive immediately presses herself against Sid while keeping Bianca in view. The brief test reveals a vulnerability as well as a capability: someone who trusts a familiar sensory signal can be disoriented when Bianca removes it.
Tactical Uses and Limits
Olive initially reduces the ability to a way of going invisible and stealing things, questioning how it could help the group when they can steal for themselves. Bianca's demonstration changes the terms of that judgment. Olive recognizes that the power could hide an army; Bianca corrects the scale, saying she does not think she could conceal an army but could hide a large raiding party. With Bianca, such a party could regain the element of surprise.
That distinction sets a concrete boundary around the ability. Bianca does not claim that she can cover an unlimited force, and her sound manipulation has its own stated condition: it works when the sound is soft enough. Within those limits, however, the combination of concealment across several senses is strategically significant. The power is not simply an individual trick for vanishing; it could interfere with an opponent's ability to detect a group and recognize the sounds around them.
Role in the Gathering
The demonstration also changes Bianca's position in the room. She begins by objecting to being asked to perform, but after showing what the caul can do, she receives attention from Duncan and the others. She does not apologize for frightening Olive; instead, she lets the aggression drain from her voice and asks whether the practical applications are now apparent. Her shift from resistance to a controlled demonstration keeps the ability connected to her agency rather than presenting her only as a useful power.
Alistair frames the abilities on offer as power, muscle, and stealth, treating them as advantages for the group. The narrator recognizes that Alistair already has their agreement, and Bianca's demonstration supplies the stealth in that pitch. Caulbearers are thus significant not only for their unusual sensory concealment but for how that gift can alter the conditions of a confrontation before it begins. The contrast between Olive's first dismissal and her later fear gives the change in understanding its measure: Bianca's caul matters because it can make an opponent's confidence in what they see, hear, or smell unreliable.
