“All the News That Fits”
Firestarter“All the News That Fits” is the motto above the reception area at Rolling Stone, where Charlie McGee arrives after a librarian directs her there. It marks the destination of her journey and frames the moment she crosses from seeking guidance into taking action.
The Motto at the Threshold
After riding the elevator to the sixteenth floor, Charlie reads the signs and turns left. At the end of the hall, she sees double glass doors opening onto a handsome reception area. Below the two words the librarian had spoken to her is the motto, “All the News That Fits.” Its placement makes it a literal sign of where she has been sent, rather than an idea explained or discussed in the scene.
Charlie Enters Rolling Stone
Charlie pauses outside the doors, then whispers, “I’m doing it, Daddy. Oh, I hope I’m doing it right.” She tugs open one of the glass doors and enters the Rolling Stone offices. The motto thus stands at the point where her uncertainty meets a concrete decision: she goes in, carrying a crumpled paper bag and a Sunkist orange, and puts the librarian’s directions into action.
