Death's Roulette

Gunsoul

Death's Roulette is Revolver’s Authority, a lethal game that transforms combat into an absolute contest of chance, nerve, and death. First invoked during the destruction of Fleshmarket, it traps Yuan Guang, Revolver, and The Gun in a saloon where every ordinary advantage disappears, and its rules force one participant to die. The same Authority later returns in a corrupted form when Revolver, unable to control The Gun’s curse, uses the game in an attempt to spare Yuan Guang from killing him and to create a chance of exorcising the curse without destroying its host.

Origin and Activation

Death's Roulette begins when The Gun arrives over Fleshmarket and announces its presence with a rain of qi-charged bullets. As the spirit-train is kicked aside and Yuan Guang prepares to save Orient and Holster, Revolver decides that ordinary resistance is no longer enough. He holsters his weapons, performs mudras without speaking them aloud, and instead sings the invocation that calls upon luck as the fairest judge. Metal qi erupts around him, expands over Yuan Guang, and catches The Gun in a ring that excludes everything else.

The surrounding energy is not merely a Barrier. Within the ring, space and time bend under Revolver’s will, revealing that the technique is an Authority: an external manifestation of its creator’s core and soul. Revolver’s approach toward the Fifth Coil gives the Authority the force to impose its own reality rather than simply defend against an attack. He completes the invocation with the declaration that two will pull the trigger and one will walk away, followed by the command for Death's Roulette to seal their fate. Even after a sniper’s bullet destroys part of his jaw, the Authority has already taken hold, and its light swallows Yuan Guang and The Gun.

The Rules of the Game

The Authority manifests as an empty saloon built from the ruins of Fleshmarket. Its world has a roof, walls, and a skull-faced table, but no doors or windows; a single flickering lamp illuminates the room. Yuan Guang sits between Revolver and The Gun, which has been reduced from a colossal monster to a human-sized avatar with metal fingers instead of cannon-hands. Their weapons and wounds vanish, and no participant can harm another through ordinary violence. Only the game can produce injury.

Three golden revolvers rest on the table, one for each player. Each weapon contains three deaths among its six chambers, giving every pull a one-in-six chance of killing either another participant or the shooter. The chambers cannot be opened or inspected, and nobody can leave or enter the pocket dimension until the Authority has claimed a life. Its rules arrive in Yuan Guang’s mind as a complex sutra script, making the game’s law as immediate and binding as physical reality.

Death's Roulette abolishes every hierarchy that normally governs the world. Its promised death ignores rank, cultivation, social position, and supernatural power: slaves and slavers, Scraps and cultivators, gods and men are equally exposed. No defense, intervention, or outside authority can protect the loser, and even the creator of the Authority is not exempt. In this space, death ceases to be a possibility and becomes a certainty assigned by the game. The saloon therefore embodies Revolver’s desire for a world in which every person stands equally before an uncaring barrel.

The Gun’s First Defeat

The first game ends before Yuan Guang can consciously decide whether to fire. The memory of Revolver’s warning echoes within him: killing The Gun would not mean killing the Gun itself. Then three shots break the silence, and Yuan Guang realizes that his finger has pulled his revolver’s trigger. Whether the Authority compelled him or fear overcame him is left unresolved; the only certain fact is that someone has died.

A hole opens in the back of The Gun’s head, and oil pours from the wound. The monster’s arms go limp, its fingers release the golden revolver, and its body collapses face-first onto the table. Death's Roulette has claimed its victim. The Authority immediately collapses, the saloon crumbling back into the ruins of Fleshmarket. Yuan Guang’s temporary weapon disappears and is replaced by Holster’s custom gift, while The Gun resumes its immense form outside the game. The lethal wound, however, remains. The colossus falls onto its side with a final whimper, and the silence that follows is filled only by the spirit-train’s wheels and the embers of Fleshmarket.

Revolver’s shocked conclusion that he has killed The Gun marks the event’s apparent victory, but the victory is already unstable. The Gun has been defeated as a body, not erased as a force. Yuan Guang later understands that his ally’s bloodlust and possession continue, turning the game from a clean execution into a temporary interruption in the Gun’s cycle.

Corruption and the Second Roulette Duel

Weeks after Revolver becomes The Gun’s host, the Authority returns in a darker form. Revolver tells Yuan Guang that he will soon lose control again and kill him. Yuan Guang raises his fist, prepared to kill Revolver first and grant him release from the curse’s pain and guilt. Revolver refuses to let Yuan Guang bear that burden after Yuan Guang risked everything to save him. Instead, he joins his hands into the same mudra and invokes Death's Roulette once more.

This time the Authority is no longer a saloon. The Gun’s presence has corrupted Revolver’s soul-space into a prison of concrete, barrel-bars, trigger locks, bloodstained floors, and the stench of a fresh grave. Yuan Guang sits across the table from the last recognizable remnant of Revolver, while Revolver’s shadow displays the Gun-tainted self: crimson eyes, a malicious grin, and the confidence that the game is rigged in its favor. The Gun will gain a powerful host regardless of which contestant survives, making the apparent fairness of the ritual conceal a deeper injustice.

A six-chamber revolver appears in Yuan Guang’s bleeding hand, with one bullet intended for him and another for his opponent. Both duelists pull their triggers, but both weapons fire soft blanks against their metal heads. The result initially seems to offer no escape. Then Yuan Guang recognizes the loophole: The Gun possesses no revolver and is therefore not a player. Its shadow merely observes the duel. The rule that forbids harm except through the game protects participants, not an entity standing outside it.

Meaning and Consequences

The second use of Death's Roulette changes the event from a weapon of execution into a possible exorcism. Revolver’s Authority is the physical incarnation of his soul, while The Gun’s shadow is the pure essence of the spirit infecting him. If the shadow can be destroyed inside the prison of Revolver’s identity, The Gun’s curse may be removed without killing Revolver. The game thus creates the right place for a distinction that ordinary combat cannot make: host and parasite occupy the same body, but they are not necessarily the same target.

The event also concentrates Yuan Guang’s moral conflict. He has already helped arm Fleshmarket’s warring sects in the hope that they would destroy one another, and he cannot dismiss the possibility that this ammunition scheme helped draw The Gun to the city. He is also burdened by Arc’s sacrifice and by the debt he feels toward Revolver, who saved him from Elder Polio and from The Gun itself. Revolver’s later confession that he kills without hatred or pleasure, treating slaves, slavers, the young, the old, Scraps, and cultivators alike as identical at the barrel’s end, makes the curse a form of moral injury as much as physical possession.

Death's Roulette therefore turns the novel’s recurring gun violence into a ritual that both reproduces and challenges that violence. Its language promises equality, but its first game leaves The Gun’s deeper essence intact; its second game appears to force Yuan Guang and Revolver to gamble over which man will carry the curse, yet the excluded shadow reveals a narrow path beyond that false choice. The roulette’s decisive consequence is not simply that someone dies. It teaches Yuan Guang that defeating The Gun requires identifying the correct target, the correct weapon, the correct place, and the correct reason—an insight that links the Authority’s logic to the conditions of the Perfect Shot.
