Gunsoul

Yuan Guang’s breakthrough into the Second Coil is both a cultivation milestone and a practical test of what that advancement means. It strengthens his body enough to change the balance of his spar with Orient, while the later discussion of the Third Coil reveals that progress along the Path of the Gun may demand the consumption of another Gunsoul’s bullet-core. The event therefore links advancement with combat competence, bodily transformation, and an ethical danger already embodied by Revolver’s decision to spare him.

The Breakthrough in Practice

The clearest demonstration of Yuan Guang’s new level occurs during his short bout with Orient in the panoramic car of Fleshmarket. Before the spar begins, Yuan assesses Orient as untrained but strong, the same basic judgment he had previously made of the Rad-Hag. Orient has almost no combat instincts or self-preservation when defending her own body. She does not move unless Yuan approaches, not because she is helpless, but because she does not need to protect herself in ordinary terms: the train itself responds to threats against her.

When Holster starts the spar with a clap, the environment becomes an extension of Orient’s defense. Tables, chairs, shelves, and carpets fall into Yuan’s path. Coiled metal tentacles burst from the floor with enough force to shatter stone, while sudden steam blinds him with searing heat. The obstacles initially make the encounter overwhelming, turning a simple approach into a confrontation with the entire living mechanism of the train.

Yuan’s Second-Coil advancement gives him the means to cross that defensive field. His fighting experience and instinct remain superior to Orient’s, but the breakthrough is not merely a matter of technique. It has reinforced his body in both large and small ways, lets him continue using Elemental Infusion at will, and has made his legs powerful enough to carry him across a room in a single bound. He jumps through the smoke, repels the metal tentacles with his own punches, and closes the distance to Orient within seconds.

The Value Shift of the Spar

The spar changes the apparent value of strength. Orient possesses overwhelming environmental protection, while Yuan possesses practiced combat judgment and the newly acquired physical capacity of the Second Coil. The train’s intervention initially places Yuan in the position of an intruder who cannot reach his target; his cultivation reverses that pressure by letting him pass through the train’s attacks rather than merely endure them.

Yuan’s confidence culminates when his hand reaches for Orient’s face and he tells her, “I’ve got you,” only for Orient to answer, “Do you, Honored Passenger?” Her response keeps the victory from becoming simple. Yuan can overcome the immediate obstacles and physically reach her, but Orient’s question reminds him that mastery over a defensive scene is not identical to mastery over the person or system being defended. The Second Coil establishes his new capability without erasing the uncertainty surrounding Orient and her relationship with the train.

The Cost of Further Advancement

The significance of Yuan’s breakthrough expands when Gayak explains what may be required to reach the Third Coil. Yuan learns that ascending through that stage involves ingesting a huge quantity of qi in a single buffet. Because a Gunsoul’s bullet-core functions like the core of a spirit-beast, another practitioner on the Path of the Gun could potentially gain strength by consuming one.

This possibility transforms the bullet-core from a sign of identity into a coveted source of cultivation power. Yuan had not previously considered that one of his kindred might hunt him for that reason. Once Gayak states it, the danger becomes frighteningly plausible: a Gunsoul’s body is not only a person’s life and soul, but also a possible resource for another Gunsoul’s advancement.

The contrast between the Second and Third Coils is therefore morally important. Yuan’s Second-Coil progress is shown through training, instinct, bodily reinforcement, and a contest with Orient’s defenses. The next stage is associated with predation and ingestion. Advancement along the same path can be earned through discipline, yet the structure of Gunsoul cultivation also creates an incentive to kill one’s own kind.

Revolver’s Mercy and Yuan’s Perspective

Yuan immediately realizes that Revolver must have understood this danger. Killing Yuan for his bullet-core could have strengthened Revolver, but Revolver allowed him to live. The breakthrough thus casts their earlier relationship in a sharper light: Revolver’s restraint was not merely a failure to exploit an opportunity, but a deliberate refusal to turn Yuan into cultivation material.

Yuan interprets that decision as evidence of Revolver’s character. In the Unmade World, meeting kind and altruistic people is rare, and Yuan considers himself fortunate that Revolver found him instead of a more unscrupulous Gunsoul. His Second-Coil breakthrough consequently carries an undercurrent of gratitude. The power that now lets him break through metal, smoke, and steam exists within a system that could just as easily make him prey.

Narrative Significance

The event places Yuan’s growth between two forms of danger. In the Fleshmarket spar, advancement gives him the bodily authority to challenge a train that acts as Orient’s protector. In the discussion of the Third Coil, the same cultivation framework threatens to convert Gunsouls into hunters and hunted, with the bullet-core serving as both soul and nourishment.

Yuan’s breakthrough is therefore not a detached power increase. It changes what he can do immediately, confirms that his body is adapting to the Path of the Gun, and prepares the reader for a harsher logic of future advancement. Its most important consequence is the tension between power and conduct: Yuan becomes stronger without abandoning the possibility of mercy, while Revolver’s earlier choice proves that survival in this world does not require every available source of strength to be consumed.
