Forging of the Sampo

Kalevala

Forging of the Sampo is Ilmarinen’s passage from magical craft to the making of the wondrous object sought in the Northland. The episode sets the Sampo’s creation within the blacksmith’s workshop, where the fire produces other marvels before Louhi carries the finished Sampo away.

The Work Begins

The magic blacksmith sets out to forge the Sampo and goes to find a blacksmith’s workshop. The account makes the undertaking material as well as magical: fire, furnace, and metals become the means through which the desired wonder takes shape.

The Forge’s First Marvel

The fire does not yield the Sampo at once. One of its first visible products is a crossbow, described as bright as moonbeams, with a golden bow and silver tips. This distinct creation gives the forging a staged quality: the furnace produces a striking object before the Sampo appears as its culminating work.

Ilmarinen and Louhi

On the third night, Ilmarinen bends low to examine the metals at the bottom of the furnace. The account marks this close inspection but does not specify the intervening details of the Sampo’s formation. Once the wondrous Sampo is ready, Louhi—the hostess of Pohyola—takes it away joyfully. Her departure with the object closes the forging episode by making the Sampo’s transfer, rather than the craft process alone, its decisive outcome.
