Bleeding Spear
MabinogionThe Bleeding Spear is a prophetic marvel in Peredur’s story: first seen in the hall of the Lame King, it becomes the test Peredur failed and the key to a later revelation about his family. Its streaming blood signifies an unresolved cause, and the failure to ask about it is linked to the king’s continuing affliction and the turmoil of his lands.
Appearance and First Encounter
At the Lame King’s court, Peredur sees a youth carrying a spear from whose point blood flows along the shaft to the youth’s hand. The weapon is presented among other wonders, but its striking appearance does not prompt Peredur to ask what it means or what caused it. The spear is therefore introduced not simply as an extraordinary object but as a question left unanswered.
The Cost of the Unasked Question
When the black maiden later confronts Peredur at Arthur’s court, she identifies his failure to inquire about the spear as a decisive error. Had he asked about the spear and the other marvels at the Lame King’s court, she says, the king would have been restored to health and his dominions returned to peace. Instead, the king must continue to endure battles and conflicts, with knights killed and women left widowed or without prospects. The spear thus marks a missed opportunity whose consequences extend beyond the court where it appeared.
Revelation and Narrative Significance
At the Castle of Wonders, a yellow-haired youth reveals that he had appeared at Arthur’s court as the black maiden and had also brought the bloodied head on a salver together with the spear. He identifies the head as that of Peredur’s cousin, killed by the Sorceresses of Gloucester, and says that he himself is Peredur’s cousin. The spear’s later appearance within this disclosure connects the earlier marvel to the family history and the prediction that Peredur is to avenge these wrongs. Its meaning is therefore only partly resolved: the narrative explains who brought it and places it beside the murdered cousin’s head, while its first appearance remains a missed occasion for Peredur to act on the marvels before him.
