Sinápsidos
MayaSinápsidos are the evolutionary lineage through which the narrator locates his own human identity: not as evolution’s final product, but as one temporary form in a history extending from ancient animals toward an unknown future. The lineage culminates, for the present, in what he calls the post-animal primate, a phrase that makes humanity both an outcome of deep time and a stage that may not yet be complete.
Evolutionary Lineage
In a conversation about vertebrates, the narrator identifies the subject of his writings as Sinápsidos, with particular attention to the lineage’s latest offshoot, the post-animal primate. He presents this evolutionary descent as personal as well as scientific: at sixty-five, he describes himself as one of these unusual creatures and connects his life to animal ancestors separated from him by immense spans of time.
The ancestry he imagines reaches back to a small shrew-like mammal that lived on Earth sixty-five million years ago. He extends the perspective further still, proposing an amphibian from 365 million years ago as another possible ancestor. The movement between these two figures scales an individual life against evolutionary time, making human existence continuous with forms of life that preceded it by hundreds of millions of years.
The Post-Animal Primate
The narrator’s designation of the human as a post-animal primate gives the evolutionary account a deliberately unfinished edge. Although he names this creature as the latest offshoot of the lineage, he immediately allows that humanity may still be in a chrysalis state. The image unsettles any assumption that the present human form represents a settled endpoint: what appears to be an accomplished stage may instead be a transition.
His account therefore treats evolutionary inheritance not as a closed history but as a process still underway. The narrator belongs to the lineage without standing outside it as its final judge; his own life is one brief instance within the larger succession he describes.
The Continuing Relay
The narrator frames the future of life as a gigantic relay race that has not ended. He predicts that the journey will continue far beyond the people listening to him, while admitting that its destination remains unknown. The relay image joins past and future: ancestral creatures pass on a history that later forms of life will carry onward, even as the human participants disappear.
This open-ended vision gives Sinápsidos significance beyond classification. The lineage is a means of locating humanity inside a vast biological journey, but it also denies humanity the status of its final destination. The long journey is still in progress, and its eventual direction cannot yet be known.
