Kunlun Mountain

Kunlun Mountain is the remote destination of Mulan and the Jade Rabbit’s search for a remedy for Xiu. Its importance lies in the garden of the Queen Mother of the West: the Jade Rabbit identifies it as the only place to find the Essence of Heavenly Majesty, an ingredient needed to make the medicine.

The Mountain and Its Garden

The Jade Rabbit explains that the Essence of Heavenly Majesty can only be found in the Queen Mother’s Garden on Kunlun Mountain. Mulan recognizes the gravity of the destination when she realizes that the garden belongs to the Queen Mother of the West, whom she knows as the Queen of the Immortals.

The Interrupted Journey

The Jade Rabbit had planned to summon a cloud and fly to the Queen Mother’s Palace on Kunlun Mountain. Reaching the garden would not guarantee success: the Queen Mother is protective of what is picked there. More immediately, the Jade Rabbit’s wounds from the fox’s attack have nearly destroyed his powers. He can no longer summon a cloud or change forms, and cannot reach Kunlun Mountain as a rabbit. The mountain thus becomes both the necessary destination of Mulan’s quest and a journey the injured guide can no longer make for her.
