The Hua sisters’ prophecy

The Hua sisters’ prophecy becomes a point of certainty for Mulan at the moment she confronts the Red Fox, but its promise is not fully explained in the available account. Mulan declares that the prophecy is now fixed and cannot be changed; later, she connects it to a hopeful future for Xiu, while the Jade Rabbit’s guarded response leaves the prophecy’s full meaning unresolved.

The Prophecy and the Essence

As night falls, Mulan plucks a blossom of the Essence of Heavenly Majesty and holds it up before the Red Fox. She identifies the flower with the prophecy of the Hua sisters, declaring that the prophecy is now set and cannot be changed. The account does not supply the prophecy’s complete wording or explain the flower’s precise role in it, so its significance rests here on Mulan’s assertion that the two are connected and that the foretold outcome has become fixed.

Mulan’s Confrontation with the Red Fox

Mulan invokes the prophecy while demanding that the Red Fox leave her sister in peace. She then approaches the Red Fox, kicks away the gourd, and faces the fox with the blossom in one hand and a sword in the other. Repeating her demand, Mulan makes the prophecy part of a direct confrontation: it is not merely a prediction about what may happen, but a claim of certainty she uses while defending Xiu.

Xiu’s Future and the Limits of Certainty

After the White Fox is gone, Mulan asks whether everything will now be all right and describes the future she expects for Xiu: she will live to grow up, save the Emperor, and bring honor to the family. The Jade Rabbit does not confirm that prediction. Instead, he observes that immortals do not like to tell what they know, and Mulan stops herself as she recalls how much he has withheld, including information Lu Ting-Pin had said he did not want revealed to her. The exchange places Mulan’s confidence in the prophecy beside the limits of what she knows: she can name the future she hopes it promises, but the conversation leaves its fulfillment unconfirmed.
