Kyo
PeacemakerThe Kyo are an alien species whose encounter with Phoenix turns the rescue of the Reunioners into a crisis of first contact. They regard the human station as an invasion and are bent on destroying it, but cooperation aboard Phoenix makes communication possible and leads to an agreement to remove the station’s population from their territory.
Identity and Context
The evidence identifies the Kyo as an alien people, but gives little information about their physical characteristics, social organization, or life beyond this encounter. Their importance here lies in the sharp conflict between their view of Reunion Station as an invasion and the residents’ urgent need to communicate with outsiders.
Neither side arrives with an established way to negotiate. The people on Reunion have no idea how to open communication with foreigners, while the Kyo likewise have no concept of negotiation with outsiders. The encounter therefore begins without a shared diplomatic framework.
Encounter with Phoenix
Phoenix reaches the Reunioners and finds itself facing the Kyo, who are intent on destroying the human station. The situation is not resolved by a human representative acting alone: the ship carries humans and Atevi working together, including Bren Cameron as a skilled translator and diplomat, Ilisidi as a revered elder, and Cajeiri as the aiji’s heir. Phoenix’s personnel have also spent a year living with Atevi.
The cooperation of two species astonishes the Kyo. A small opening comes through a Kyo who has come to communicate with Cajeiri, and the Kyo become willing to ask questions. That exchange allows each side to learn what the other wants. The account thus makes contact a practical achievement of shared presence and communication, rather than the result of a pre-existing agreement or common diplomatic custom.
Evacuation and Significance
The parties agree that the Reunioners will be removed from Kyo territory. Phoenix carries out the removal partly by force and partly with the agreement of the Reunion population; the station’s library is stripped, its people are taken aboard, and Phoenix then sets out for the Atevi homeworld.
The Kyo remain an unfamiliar people in the account, rather than a society described in detail. Their role is decisive nonetheless: their response to Reunion Station makes evacuation necessary, while the first exchange with Cajeiri creates a path from imminent destruction to a negotiated outcome. The encounter also demonstrates how cooperation between humans and Atevi can make communication possible where neither side initially knows how to begin.
