Indra Revives the Fallen Monkey Army
RamayanaIndra’s restoration of the fallen monkey army turns a battlefield’s loss into a scene of collective return. Ráma asks for the dead to be restored, and Indra grants the rare boon; the warriors rise from Yáma’s domain and assemble around their king.
The Request
The episode occurs in the aftermath of the fighting, when Indra, ruler of the sky and slayer of Páka, speaks to Ráma. Ráma uses the moment not to ask for a reward for himself but to plead for the fallen Vánar warriors. His request makes the army’s losses the central concern of the exchange.
Indra’s Boon
Indra calls the requested favor a high boon, one that no one but Ráma should win. He nevertheless honors the word he has given and grants the restoration. The exchange presents Ráma’s appeal as extraordinary, while Indra’s response makes the spoken promise consequential: divine favor is expressed through a deed that reverses the battlefield’s deadliest outcome.
The Army Returns
The fallen warriors are restored from Yáma’s dark domain. They rise like sleepers waking and fill the plain, once again arrayed around their royal chief. The image changes the scene from a tally of casualties to a renewed gathering of the army. Victory is thus marked not only by the defeat of Ráma’s enemy but also by the return of the allies who fought beside him.
