Lakshmana’s recovery after Ravana’s magic spear strikes him

Ramayana

Lakshmana’s recovery is the turn from a deadly spear attack to an urgent search for healing: after Rávaṇ strikes him with a weapon forged by Maya, Ráma sends Hanumán to Mahodaya Mountain, where powerful herbs grow.

The Spear Attack

As arrows fall thickly against Rávaṇ’s armor, he shifts his aim to Lakshmana and cries out against him. He then hurls a mortal spear, forged by Maya with magic. The attack redirects the battle’s immediate danger onto Lakshmana and leaves Ráma confronting the possible loss of his brother.

Ráma’s Response

The following canto, titled “Lakshman Healed,” opens with Ráma gazing tenderly at Lakshmana’s face. The intimate gesture follows the violence of the assault: the battle is no longer only a clash between armies, but a crisis centered on the life of someone Ráma loves.

The Search for Healing

Ráma addresses Hanumán and sends him to the high peak of Mahodaya Mountain, where herbs of sovereign virtue grow. The episode thus moves from the spear’s destructive force to the prospect of restoration, making the search for medicinal herbs the immediate means by which Lakshmana’s recovery is pursued.
